JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling Guide

How to Fill Choices · Optimal Ordering Strategy · Locking · Expert Tips

What is JoSAA Choice Filling?

Choice filling is the process of selecting and ordering your preferred college-branch combinations on the JoSAA portal before seat allotment begins. This is the single most important step in JoSAA counselling — your choices directly determine what seat you receive across all 5 rounds.

JoSAA uses an algorithm that assigns you the highest-ranked choice in your list where your rank is within the closing rank for that seat. The key insight: fill your absolute dream choice first, then work down in order of preference.

Choice filling opens simultaneously with registration on josaa.nic.in and typically runs for 5–7 days. During this window, you can add, reorder, remove, and lock choices as many times as you wish before the deadline.

Step-by-Step Choice Filling Process

  1. 1

    Login to josaa.nic.in

Use your registered JoSAA credentials. Navigate to 'Choice Filling' section from your dashboard.

  2. 2

    Browse Available Institutes and Programmes

Use filters: by institute type (IIT/NIT/IIIT/GFTI), state, branch, and quota. Browse the complete list of available seats.

  3. 3

    Add Choices to Your List

Click 'Add to Choices' for each college-branch you want. Add liberally — you can remove or reorder later. Aim for 60–100 choices.

  4. 4

    Order Choices by Preference

Drag and reorder choices. Your most desired college-branch should be at the top (Choice 1). Least preferred but acceptable choices go at the bottom.

  5. 5

    Check Mock Allotment

Once mock allotment is available (2 days before actual allotment), check what seat you would get with current choices. Use this to refine ordering.

  6. 6

    Lock Your Choices

Before the deadline, click 'Lock Choices'. Verify the final order is correct. Download/save the confirmation.

Expert Strategy for Choice Ordering

Rank 1–500 (JEE Advanced)

  • IIT Bombay CSE, IIT Delhi CSE should be top choices.
  • Add multiple IIT Bombay/Delhi branches below.
  • Include IIT Kanpur CSE, IIT Madras CSE as fallbacks.

Rank 500–3000 (JEE Advanced)

  • Top IIT branches (CSE at Hyderabad, Guwahati, BHU) followed by NITs.
  • IIT Roorkee/Kharagpur non-CS branches can be good alternatives.
  • NIT Trichy/Warangal CSE as strong fallback.

Rank 3000–10000 (JEE Main)

  • NIT Trichy/Warangal CSE-ECE at top.
  • IIIT Hyderabad (if JEE Advanced qualified) for CSE.
  • NIT Surathkal, NIT Calicut as next tier.

Rank 10000–50000 (JEE Main)

  • Target NITs for preferred branches.
  • Include state-quota NITs for home state advantage.
  • IIITs are excellent for CS/IT in this range.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Filling too few choices (under 20) — drastically reduces upgrade chances.
  • Not using mock allotment to verify ordering before the deadline.
  • Putting a 'safe' college at the top instead of your dream choice.
  • Forgetting to lock choices — unlocked choices may not be saved.
  • Including only one or two institutes without considering branches.
  • Ignoring home-state quota for NITs — can significantly lower the required rank.
  • Not filling any GFTI choices as the lowest backup options.
1
How many choices should I fill in JoSAA 2026?
There is no strict minimum, but experts recommend filling at least 50–80 choices. More choices increase your chances of getting a better seat in later rounds via the float mechanism. Fill choices from aspirational (top picks) to safe (guaranteed seats within your rank range). Never fill only a few choices hoping for a specific seat.
2
Is choice locking mandatory in JoSAA 2026?
Yes, you must lock your choices before the deadline. If you fill choices but do not lock them, your last-saved order is considered. However, it is strongly advised to actively lock to ensure no accidental changes. Once locked, changes cannot be made until the next editing window (if available).
3
Can I change choices after locking in JoSAA 2026?
During the choice filling window, you can edit and re-lock multiple times. But once the choice filling window closes, no changes are possible. Your final locked preference order is used for allotment in all 5 rounds.
4
What is the difference between choice filling for IITs and NITs in JoSAA?
Both are done in the same portal with the same choice list. However, IIT choices are only visible/accessible to JEE Advanced qualified candidates. JEE Main only candidates see NIT/IIIT/GFTI options. The ordering rule is the same: rank from most preferred to least preferred.
5
Should I fill choices I am unlikely to get?
Yes — especially aspirational choices. JoSAA's algorithm tries to match you to the highest-ranked choice where you fit. Adding aspirational choices (even if they need a better rank) costs nothing and could result in an allotment if seats are available in later rounds. The risk is zero.
6
What happens if I fill only one choice and it gets allotted — can I get an upgrade?
No. If you have only one choice and it gets allotted, there's nothing higher to upgrade to. Filling more choices above your allotted one is what enables the upgrade mechanism (Float). This is why filling 50+ choices in order of preference is strongly recommended.
