JoSAA 2026 Opening and Closing Ranks – How to Use OR-CR Data

Opening Rank and Closing Rank are the most important numbers for JoSAA college prediction. Here's how to read and use them correctly.

Understanding JoSAA OR-CR Data

Every JoSAA allotment round publishes Opening Rank (OR) and Closing Rank (CR) for every institute-branch-category-quota combination. This data is the backbone of college prediction.

How to Use OR-CR for Choice Filling

  1. Find your CRL rank from your JEE Main/Advanced scorecard.
  2. Go to josaa.nic.in → Opening & Closing Ranks → Select Year 2025 → Round 6.
  3. Filter by category and quota (GEN-OS, HS, OBC-OS, etc.).
  4. Shortlist institutes where your rank ≤ CR (2025).
  5. Add a safety buffer — also include institutes where your rank is within CR + 10% as aspirational choices.
  6. Order your choices from most preferred to least preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions – JoSAA Opening & Closing Ranks

Common queries about OR-CR data in JoSAA 2026

1
What is Opening Rank (OR) in JoSAA?
Opening Rank is the rank of the first candidate allotted a seat in a particular institute-branch-category-quota combination in a given round. It is typically the highest (best) rank that got that seat. It gives you a sense of how competitive the best candidates for that seat were.
2
What is Closing Rank (CR) in JoSAA?
Closing Rank is the rank of the last candidate allotted a seat in that institute-branch-category-quota in a given round. If your rank is equal to or better than the Closing Rank, you have a realistic chance of getting that seat. Closing Rank is the most important number for admission prediction.
3
Which round's OR-CR data should I use for prediction?
Always use Round 6 (Final Round) OR-CR data for the most accurate prediction. Round 1 closing ranks are tighter (lower/better) and will relax with each round. Round 6 data represents the actual final cutoff for each seat.
4
Where can I find JoSAA opening and closing ranks?
Official OR-CR data is published on josaa.nic.in after each allotment round. Navigate to 'Opening & Closing Ranks' section, select the year (2025 for last year's data), round number, institute type, and category to download the data.
5
My rank is between OR and CR — will I definitely get that seat?
Not necessarily. OR-CR data is from the previous year. JoSAA 2026 cutoffs can vary based on total applicants, seat availability, and competition. If your rank is within last year's OR-CR range, it is a positive indicator but not a guarantee. Always add buffer choices above and below.
