JoSAA 2026: Freeze, Float & Slide
Upgrade vs Accept · What Each Option Means · Strategy for Every Rank
Why This Choice Exists at All
JoSAA runs multiple rounds (typically up to six, including the mandatory reporting rounds) precisely because seat availability keeps changing as candidates get allotted, accept, reject, or get upgraded across every institute and category simultaneously. Rather than forcing you to make an irreversible decision the moment you receive your first allotment, JoSAA gives every candidate a choice at each round about how they want their own seat treated for the next round's processing — this is what Freeze, Float, and Slide represent. Understanding this mechanism well is arguably one of the highest-leverage things you can do in the entire counselling process, since choosing the wrong option at the wrong time can either cost you a genuinely better seat you were close to getting, or unnecessarily put a seat you were happy with at risk.
It's worth being clear that this choice is made in relation to your own choice list — the list of institute-branch combinations you filled in order of preference during registration. Float and Slide only attempt to move you to options that rank higher in your own list than your current allotment; they will never move you sideways or downward, and they will never allot you something you did not include as a choice. This is why filling a long, carefully ordered choice list matters just as much as the Freeze/Float/Slide decision itself — the upgrade mechanism can only work with what you've told JoSAA you would accept.
The Three Options Explained
🔒
FREEZE
Meaning: Keep current seat. No upgrade in future rounds.
Choose when: When you are completely satisfied with your allotted college and branch.
Note: You miss out on possible upgrades.
⬆️
FLOAT
Meaning: Keep current seat AND try for better choice in next rounds.
Choose when: When you want an upgrade to a higher-preference choice (even a different institute).
Note: If upgraded, old seat is released. No going back.
↔️
SLIDE
Meaning: Upgrade only within the same institute (different branch).
Choose when: When you prefer your current institute but want a better branch there.
Note: Cannot move to a different, better institute via Slide.

Which Option Should You Choose?
There isn't a single universally correct answer here, because the right choice genuinely depends on how your current allotment compares to the rest of your choice list, and how many rounds remain before the process concludes. A useful way to think about it is to ask: among the choices ranked above my current allotment on my own list, how many still have a realistic chance of opening up for someone at my rank, based on how those specific institute-branch-seat-type combinations have trended in earlier rounds this year? If the honest answer is "several, and they're not wildly out of reach," Float is usually the right call. If the honest answer is "none realistically, everything above this was aspirational," Freezing early can save you the anxiety of an unlikely upgrade and let you focus on preparing for reporting.
Choose FLOAT if:
- You have aspirational choices (better college/branch) above your current allotment in your list.
- You're allotted a seat but would prefer a better one if available.
- You're not in the final round (Round 5) yet.
- You are most candidates — Float is the recommended default unless you have a specific reason to Freeze or Slide.
Choose FREEZE if:
- You've been allotted your top choice or a seat you're completely happy with.
- You're in Round 5 (last round) — Freeze is automatic after Round 5.
- All choices above your current allotment in your list are undesirable to you.
Choose SLIDE if:
- You love your current institute but got a less preferred branch there.
- Example: Allotted NIT Trichy ECE, but NIT Trichy CSE is in your choice list at a higher position.
- You don't want to risk moving to a completely different institute.
What Happens at the Final Round
A detail that catches many candidates off guard is that Freeze/Float/Slide choices don't remain relevant indefinitely — by the time JoSAA reaches its final allotment round, any candidate still on Float or Slide is typically auto-frozen to whatever seat they hold at that point, since there are no further rounds left in which an upgrade could occur. This means the practical decision window for choosing Float over Freeze is really the rounds before the final one, and it's worth checking the specific year's official round schedule on josaa.nic.in so you know exactly how many opportunities for upgrade remain before you need to be fully comfortable freezing.
It's also worth understanding what happens if you take no action at all during a response window. Historically, JoSAA has treated a non-response in some years as an implicit Float (continuing to seek upgrades) and in other years may have specific default rules — this detail has been revised across counselling cycles, so always actively select your preferred option each round rather than assuming a default will work in your favor. Missing a response deadline entirely, as opposed to simply not changing your existing selection, can in some circumstances lead to more serious consequences including forfeiting the seat, so treat every round's response window as something requiring your active attention rather than passive inaction.
