JoSAA 2026 Female Supernumerary Seats – How They Actually Work

Extra seats added by IITs above sanctioned strength — complete guide for female JEE Advanced qualifiers

What Are Female Supernumerary Seats?

The IIT Council launched the Female Supernumerary Seat initiative to address historically low female enrollment in IITs (which was around 8-10% before 2018). Starting 2018, all IITs began adding extra seats exclusively for female candidates, over and above the officially sanctioned intake. By 2020, the target was set at 20% female enrollment, achieved through these additional seats.

The key distinction is that these seats are additive, not carved out of existing seats. If an IIT had 100 seats in a branch, it now effectively has up to 120 seats — with the 20 extra reserved for female candidates. Male candidates still compete for all 100 original seats, so their access is completely unaffected.

All 23 IITs participate in this scheme. NITs and IIITs do not offer female supernumerary seats under this particular IIT Council scheme, though they follow their own gender-neutral seat policies.

How Supernumerary Seats Appear in JoSAA

When a female candidate opens the JoSAA choice filling portal, each branch at each IIT appears multiple times depending on available seat types. You will see entries like:

IIT Bombay – CSE – Open— Regular seat, open to all categories including female
IIT Bombay – CSE – Open (Female Supernumerary)— Extra seat, female candidates only
IIT Bombay – CSE – OBC-NCL— OBC-NCL quota seat
IIT Bombay – CSE – OBC-NCL (Female Supernumerary)— OBC-NCL extra seat, female only

Strategy: Always add the Supernumerary version of a preferred branch just above the regular version in your choice list. Since supernumerary seats are exclusively for female candidates, the competition pool is smaller and closing ranks are slightly more relaxed.

Choice Filling Strategy for Female Candidates

Female candidates have a significant advantage in JoSAA choice filling because the same branch can be added twice — once as Supernumerary and once as the regular seat type. Here is the optimal ordering approach:

  1. 1Top preference as Supernumerary: Add your most desired branch + institute as the Supernumerary variant first.
  2. 2Same branch regular seat: Immediately below the supernumerary choice, add the regular seat for the same branch (slightly safer fallback).
  3. 3Repeat for next preferred branches: Continue this Supernumerary → Regular pairing pattern for all subsequent preferences.
  4. 4Add safe backups: End your list with branches where your rank is well within the closing rank — both Supernumerary and regular — to ensure at least one confirmed allotment.

Open guide
1
What are female supernumerary seats at IITs?
Female supernumerary seats are additional seats created by IITs over and above their sanctioned intake specifically to increase the gender ratio. IITs add up to 20% extra seats for female candidates. These are genuine additional seats — not carved out of the existing intake — so they do not reduce seats available to male candidates.
2
Do supernumerary seats appear separately in JoSAA choice filling?
Yes. In the JoSAA choice list, you will see the same branch listed twice: once under the regular seat type (e.g., GEN, OBC-NCL) and once with a 'Supernumerary' designation. Female candidates should add the Supernumerary version above the regular version for the same branch and institute, as supernumerary closing ranks are generally more relaxed.
3
Are supernumerary seats available at all IITs?
Yes, all 23 IITs offer female supernumerary seats as part of the national initiative to increase female enrollment at IITs. NITs and IIITs do not have this specific supernumerary scheme, though they have standard gender-neutral seats.
4
What is the closing rank difference between supernumerary and regular female seats?
Supernumerary seats typically close at ranks 10-30% higher (worse) than the regular Open Female seats for the same branch at the same IIT. For example, if IIT Bombay CSE (Open Female) closes at rank 350, the supernumerary version may close at rank 400-450. The exact difference varies year to year.
5
Do female candidates need extra documents for supernumerary seats?
No extra documents are required specifically for supernumerary seats. Standard JoSAA documents apply: Class 10/12 marksheets, JEE scorecard, and category certificates if applicable. The supernumerary eligibility is determined automatically based on gender as declared in your JEE Advanced registration.

Key Takeaway

Supernumerary seats are additional — not shared with male candidates. Always add both the Supernumerary and regular versions of your preferred branches in JoSAA choice filling.
