How JoSAA Counselling Works
Complete step-by-step guide — from registration and choice filling to seat allotment, Float/Freeze/Slide and physical reporting
What is JoSAA?
JoSAA — the Joint Seat Allocation Authority — is the centralized body that conducts seat allocation for all 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 33 GFTIs every year. It runs 6 rounds of allotment over 4–5 weeks, starting approximately 2 days after the JEE Advanced result.
The process is entirely merit-based. No management quota, no donations, no interviews — your JEE rank is the only factor. The algorithm is transparent and processes all registered candidates simultaneously, assigning each the best available seat from their choice list based on rank order.
JoSAA 2026 is expected to begin on June 3, 2026 (registration opens) with Round 1 allotment around June 15, 2026, and the final Round 6 wrapping up by early July 2026.
The 8-Step JoSAA Process
Step 1
Registration on josaa.nic.in
Register using your JEE Main / JEE Advanced roll number within 3–5 days of the JEE Advanced result. Create a JoSAA account and verify your email and mobile number.
Step 2
Choice Filling
Enter and rank your preferred college-branch combinations (choices). You can add up to hundreds of choices. Order them strictly by preference — the algorithm respects this order exactly.
Step 3
Mock Allotment
JoSAA releases a mock allotment before final locking, showing you a preview of the likely seat based on your current choice list and rank. Use this to refine your list.
Step 4
Choice Locking
After reviewing the mock allotment, you lock your final choice list. Once locked, it cannot be changed for that round. Ensure your ordering is correct before locking.
Step 5
Round 1 Allotment
The JoSAA algorithm runs and assigns each candidate the highest-priority feasible choice from their locked list. Results are published on josaa.nic.in.
Step 6
Candidate Response
Pay the seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 General / ₹15,000 SC/ST/PwD) and select your response: Freeze (accept current seat, exit further rounds), Float (keep current seat but try for better), or Slide (try for better branch in same institute).
Step 7
Rounds 2–6
Candidates who chose Float or Slide participate in further rounds. The algorithm tries to upgrade them to higher-priority choices as seats become available due to withdrawals or new vacancies. Each round follows the same accept-respond cycle.
Step 8
Physical Reporting
After your final allotment, travel to the allotted institute, complete document verification, pay remaining institute fees, and complete the admission process.
How the JoSAA Algorithm Works
The JoSAA algorithm is a variant of the Deferred Acceptance (Gale-Shapley) mechanism adapted for seat allocation. Here is how it works in practice:
- Candidates are processed in rank order — rank 1 is processed first, then rank 2, and so on.
- For each candidate, the algorithm checks choices from their #1 preference downward and assigns the first choice for which a seat is available in the correct category.
- Once a seat is assigned and accepted, it is removed from the pool for that round.
- If you choose Float, your current seat is held, but the algorithm tries to upgrade you to a higher-priority choice in the next round if a vacancy appears.
- If you choose Slide, the algorithm tries to upgrade you to a better branch within the same institute only.
- If you choose Freeze, you exit the upgrade process and your seat is confirmed.
Key insight: Ordering your choices correctly is the single most important strategy in JoSAA. Always put your absolute dream choice at #1, even if it seems out of reach — you have nothing to lose. The algorithm only moves you down to feasible options.
