How JoSAA Counselling Works

Complete step-by-step guide — from registration and choice filling to seat allotment, Float/Freeze/Slide and physical reporting

What is JoSAA?

JoSAA — the Joint Seat Allocation Authority — is the centralized body that conducts seat allocation for all 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 33 GFTIs every year. It runs 6 rounds of allotment over 4–5 weeks, starting approximately 2 days after the JEE Advanced result.

The process is entirely merit-based. No management quota, no donations, no interviews — your JEE rank is the only factor. The algorithm is transparent and processes all registered candidates simultaneously, assigning each the best available seat from their choice list based on rank order.

JoSAA 2026 is expected to begin on June 3, 2026 (registration opens) with Round 1 allotment around June 15, 2026, and the final Round 6 wrapping up by early July 2026.

The 8-Step JoSAA Process

1

Step 1

Registration on josaa.nic.in

Register using your JEE Main / JEE Advanced roll number within 3–5 days of the JEE Advanced result. Create a JoSAA account and verify your email and mobile number.

2

Step 2

Choice Filling

Enter and rank your preferred college-branch combinations (choices). You can add up to hundreds of choices. Order them strictly by preference — the algorithm respects this order exactly.

3

Step 3

Mock Allotment

JoSAA releases a mock allotment before final locking, showing you a preview of the likely seat based on your current choice list and rank. Use this to refine your list.

4

Step 4

Choice Locking

After reviewing the mock allotment, you lock your final choice list. Once locked, it cannot be changed for that round. Ensure your ordering is correct before locking.

5

Step 5

Round 1 Allotment

The JoSAA algorithm runs and assigns each candidate the highest-priority feasible choice from their locked list. Results are published on josaa.nic.in.

6

Step 6

Candidate Response

Pay the seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 General / ₹15,000 SC/ST/PwD) and select your response: Freeze (accept current seat, exit further rounds), Float (keep current seat but try for better), or Slide (try for better branch in same institute).

7

Step 7

Rounds 2–6

Candidates who chose Float or Slide participate in further rounds. The algorithm tries to upgrade them to higher-priority choices as seats become available due to withdrawals or new vacancies. Each round follows the same accept-respond cycle.

8

Step 8

Physical Reporting

After your final allotment, travel to the allotted institute, complete document verification, pay remaining institute fees, and complete the admission process.

How the JoSAA Algorithm Works

The JoSAA algorithm is a variant of the Deferred Acceptance (Gale-Shapley) mechanism adapted for seat allocation. Here is how it works in practice:

  • Candidates are processed in rank order — rank 1 is processed first, then rank 2, and so on.
  • For each candidate, the algorithm checks choices from their #1 preference downward and assigns the first choice for which a seat is available in the correct category.
  • Once a seat is assigned and accepted, it is removed from the pool for that round.
  • If you choose Float, your current seat is held, but the algorithm tries to upgrade you to a higher-priority choice in the next round if a vacancy appears.
  • If you choose Slide, the algorithm tries to upgrade you to a better branch within the same institute only.
  • If you choose Freeze, you exit the upgrade process and your seat is confirmed.

Key insight: Ordering your choices correctly is the single most important strategy in JoSAA. Always put your absolute dream choice at #1, even if it seems out of reach — you have nothing to lose. The algorithm only moves you down to feasible options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about how JoSAA counselling works

1
How does the JoSAA algorithm work?
The JoSAA algorithm processes candidates in order of their rank (lowest rank number = highest merit). For each candidate, it checks their choice list from top to bottom and assigns the first choice for which a seat is still available. Once a seat is filled, it is unavailable to lower-ranked candidates. Candidates who choose Float are re-evaluated in later rounds if a higher-priority choice becomes available.
2
Can I get my first choice in JoSAA?
Yes, if a seat is available in your first-choice college-branch combination when your rank is processed. The algorithm starts from rank 1 and works downward, so candidates with better ranks are more likely to get first-choice seats. If all seats in your first choice are filled before your rank is reached, the algorithm moves to your second choice, and so on.
3
Why didn't I get my first choice in JoSAA?
This typically means all seats in that college-branch combination were filled by candidates with better ranks before your rank was processed. The demand for top college-branch pairs (like IIT Bombay CSE or NIT Trichy CSE) far exceeds supply, so only candidates within a narrow rank range can secure those seats.
4
What happens in JoSAA Round 1?
In Round 1, JoSAA runs its seat allocation algorithm over all registered candidates and their choice lists. Each candidate receives their best feasible allotment based on their rank and available seats. Results are announced on josaa.nic.in. Candidates must then pay the seat acceptance fee and choose Freeze, Float, or Slide within the response window.
5
What if I am not allotted a seat in JoSAA?
If you are not allotted any seat in JoSAA (all your choices are above your rank), you can add more choices in subsequent rounds, especially for lower-tier NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After all 6 JoSAA rounds, you can participate in CSAB 2026 for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats, or explore state counselling and private college admissions.
