JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling for OBC-NCL Candidates

How OBC-NCL Quota Works · Category vs General Rank · Closing Ranks · Strategy

How OBC-NCL Quota Works in JoSAA

OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer) candidates are entitled to 27% of all seats at every JoSAA participating institute — including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. These seats are filled using the OBC-NCL category rank, which is separate from the overall JEE rank.

The 27% reservation applies across all programmes and branches. If a branch at an NIT has 60 seats in total, approximately 16 seats are reserved for OBC-NCL candidates. OBC-NCL candidates compete only within their own category pool for these reserved seats — not against general category candidates.

Importantly, OBC-NCL candidates can also compete for OPEN (unreserved) seats using their overall JEE rank. This dual eligibility is a major advantage: you effectively get two chances at every seat.

OBC-NCL Rank vs General Rank — Key Distinction

Two Ranks, Two Opportunities

Your JEE Advanced or JEE Main overall rank is used for general (OPEN) category seats. Your OBC-NCL category rank is used for OBC-NCL reserved seats. You are eligible to appear in both pools simultaneously.

JoSAA automatically considers whichever pathway gives you the better allotment. You do not need to choose one or the other — the algorithm does it for you. This is why the strategy is simple: add both OPEN and OBC-NCL category choices for every institute-branch you want.

  • If your general rank qualifies for an OPEN seat, you may receive it.
  • If your general rank doesn't qualify OPEN but your OBC-NCL rank qualifies the reserved seat, you receive the OBC-NCL seat.
  • In either case, the seat and programme are identical — only the quota label differs.

OBC-NCL Closing Ranks 2025 (Reference)

OBC-NCL ranks shown below are category ranks — a lower OBC-NCL rank number means more competitive within the OBC pool. These are 2025 figures for reference; 2026 ranks may vary.

Strategy: Should You Fill OPEN or OBC-NCL Choices?

The answer is: fill BOTH for every institute-branch you want.

For each institute-branch combination you desire, add it twice in your choice list:

  1. 1

OPEN category seat — at higher priority (earlier in your list)

If your general rank qualifies, you may receive the OPEN seat. This is typically the same programme, just allocated from the unreserved pool.

  2. 2

OBC-NCL category seat — immediately below, as fallback

If your general rank doesn't qualify OPEN, your OBC-NCL category rank is used for this choice. This ensures you have a second shot at the same programme.

Example: Targeting NIT Trichy CSE

Add "NIT Trichy – CSE – OPEN – OS" at position 5, then "NIT Trichy – CSE – OBC-NCL – OS" at position 6. If general rank qualifies OPEN, you get position 5's allotment. If not but OBC-NCL rank qualifies, you get position 6's allotment. Either way, you get NIT Trichy CSE.

OBC-NCL Certificate Requirements

  • Certificate must explicitly state 'Non-Creamy Layer' — a plain OBC certificate is not valid for central counselling.
  • Certificate must be within its validity period (typically 3 years from issue date for state certificates).
  • State OBC certificates without NCL status are NOT accepted for IITs, NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs.
  • The certificate must be issued by a competent authority (Tehsildar or above, as specified by your state).
  • Certificates issued in a family member's name cannot be used — it must be in the candidate's name.
  • Always check the specific format and authority required in the JoSAA 2026 Information Brochure at josaa.nic.in.

Open guide
1
If I'm OBC-NCL, do I get 27% of every seat type at every institute?
Yes, all JoSAA participating institutes (IIT, NIT, IIIT, GFTI) reserve 27% seats for OBC-NCL. However, seats at different institutes and branches have different closing ranks within the OBC-NCL category. A branch with fewer seats overall will also have fewer OBC-NCL seats, meaning competition within the OBC pool can still be intense for popular branches.
2
My OBC-NCL certificate says just 'OBC' without 'Non-Creamy Layer'. Is it valid?
No. For JoSAA and central counselling purposes, you specifically need an OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer) certificate. A plain OBC certificate without explicit NCL status is not valid for reserved category benefits at central institutions. Get a fresh certificate from your competent authority that clearly mentions 'Non-Creamy Layer'.
3
Can I use my OBC rank to get into IIT and then use general rank for NIT?
JoSAA handles this automatically through a single unified choice list. For each choice, JoSAA uses whichever rank and category gives you the best allotment. You do not need to specify separately which rank to use for which institute. Simply add both OPEN and OBC-NCL category versions of choices you want — the algorithm works in your favor.
4
What is the income limit for OBC-NCL for JoSAA 2026?
The Non-Creamy Layer income limit is currently ₹8 lakh annual family income (revised in 2017). Families earning above ₹8 lakh are considered 'Creamy Layer' and cannot avail OBC reservation benefits for central government institutions. This limit applies to gross annual income from all sources.
5
My OBC-NCL certificate was issued 2 years ago. Is it still valid?
OBC-NCL certificates typically have a validity of 3 years for state-issued certificates. However, JoSAA may specify its own requirements in the Information Brochure each year. Always verify the exact validity requirement on josaa.nic.in for the current year's brochure. When in doubt, obtain a fresh certificate — it avoids last-minute document rejection.
