EWS Income Certificate JoSAA 2026 – FAQs

Common questions about EWS income certificate for JoSAA 2026

1
What is the income limit for EWS certificate for JoSAA 2026?
For EWS (Economically Weaker Section) status in JoSAA 2026, the family income must be below ₹8 lakh per annum (annual gross income from all sources including salary, business, agriculture, and other income). The ₹8 lakh limit applies to the family as a whole, not just the candidate or parents alone. This was set by the Government of India in 2019 and applies uniformly to all central government institutions including IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
2
What property conditions apply for EWS certificate?
For EWS certificate, in addition to income below ₹8 lakh/year, the family must NOT: (1) Own 5 acres or more of agricultural land. (2) Own a residential flat of 1000 sq ft or more in a notified municipality. (3) Own a residential plot of 100 sq yards or more in a notified municipality. (4) Own a residential plot of 200 sq yards or more in a non-notified municipality. Meeting the income criterion alone is not sufficient — all property conditions must also be satisfied.
3
Who issues EWS certificate for JoSAA 2026?
EWS certificate for JoSAA 2026 must be issued by: Tehsildar, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDM), District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner, or any other officer designated by the state government for this purpose. The certificate must be in the prescribed central government format. It must be issued for the CURRENT FINANCIAL YEAR (FY 2026-27 for JoSAA 2026 — April 2026 to March 2027). Certificate from any previous year is NOT valid.
4
Can OBC candidates also claim EWS?
No. EWS reservation is specifically for General (OPEN) category candidates who are economically weaker. Candidates belonging to SC, ST, or OBC-NCL categories are NOT eligible for EWS reservation — they already have their own reservations. Only candidates from the unreserved (General) category who meet the income and property criteria can claim EWS status. EWS is essentially a 10% reservation within the General category for economically weaker General candidates.
5
How much time does it take to get an EWS certificate?
Getting an EWS certificate typically takes 1–4 weeks depending on your state and tehsildar office efficiency. Some states have online systems where you can apply and get it faster. Apply well in advance — don't wait until JoSAA registration opens. You will need income proof documents (salary slips, ITR, Form 16 or affidavit of income), property details, and a family declaration. Get 4–5 copies of the certificate once issued for use across different applications.
