ST Category

JoSAA 2026 for ST Category – Seats, Cutoffs & Strategy

7.5% reservation at all IITs, NITs and IIITs — tribal certificate guide, closing ranks, and home state quota explained

ST Reservation: Key Facts

Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates receive 7.5% reservation at all CFTIs under JoSAA. While this is the smallest of the three major reservation categories (SC: 15%, OBC-NCL: 27%), it applies across all institutes and branches, giving ST candidates access to seats at premier institutes with significantly relaxed rank requirements.

For a batch of 60 CSE seats at NIT Trichy, approximately 4-5 seats are reserved for ST candidates. With typically fewer ST candidates applying to top engineering programs, the effective competition per seat can be lower than for other reserved categories.

* JEE Main All India Rank from JoSAA 2025's final round (Round 6; JoSAA 2025 had 6 rounds, while JoSAA 2026 has 5). OS = Other State quota. HS (Home State) ranks will be more relaxed. Data based on JoSAA 2025.

Home State vs Other State ST Quota

At NITs, seats are split between Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quotas (typically 50:50). ST candidates from the same state as the NIT compete under HS-ST quota, while ST candidates from all other states compete under OS-ST quota.

HS-ST quotas generally have more relaxed (higher) closing ranks because the competition is limited to ST candidates from one state only. An ST candidate from Tamil Nadu applying to NIT Trichy competes in the HS-ST pool, which is typically less competitive than OS-ST.

Strategy Tip

Add your home state NIT with HS-ST choices prominently. You have a double advantage: home state preference AND tribal reservation. This combination can open doors to CSE at top-5 NITs even with ranks above 30,000-40,000 JEE Main.

Open guide
1
What is the ST reservation percentage in JoSAA?
ST (Scheduled Tribe) candidates get 7.5% reservation at all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) in JoSAA — covering all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. With 7.5% reservation on a typical NIT CSE batch of 60 seats, around 4-5 seats are reserved for ST candidates. At popular institutes, this means ST candidates can access CSE with ranks as high as 25,000-40,000 in JEE Main.
2
What certificate is required for ST category in JoSAA?
A permanent Scheduled Tribe (tribal) certificate issued by the competent authority of the state/UT where the candidate belongs is required. The issuing authority is typically the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Chief Presidency Magistrate, or Collector. Importantly, the candidate's tribe must appear in the Presidential Order (tribal list) for that specific state — a tribe recognized in one state may not be recognized in another.
3
How does Home State ST quota work at NITs?
At NITs, seats are divided into Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quotas. For HS seats, candidates from the same state as the NIT compete. For OS seats, candidates from all other states compete. ST candidates competing for HS seats at their home state NIT will find more relaxed closing ranks compared to OS seats. For example, an ST candidate from Tamil Nadu applying to NIT Trichy will be under the HS-ST quota, which has better ranks than OS-ST.
4
Are there preparatory courses for ST candidates at IITs?
Yes, IITs offer a 1-year Preparatory Course specifically for SC and ST candidates who narrowly miss the JEE Advanced cutoff. ST candidates who qualify the Preparatory Course entrance exam and successfully complete the year-long course get direct B.Tech admission to IITs. This scheme is available only at IITs, not at NITs or IIITs. Stipends and accommodation are provided during the preparatory year.
5
What documents should ST candidates carry for physical reporting?
ST candidates must carry: (1) Original tribal/ST certificate from competent authority, (2) Certificate in the format for Central Government purposes, (3) Multiple photocopies (10+), (4) Class 10 and 12 marksheets, (5) JEE scorecard, (6) JoSAA provisional allotment letter, (7) Fee payment receipt, (8) Passport-size photographs, and (9) Government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar/PAN). Some institutes also require a Medical Fitness Certificate.

Important Note

A tribe recognized in one state may not be listed in another state's Presidential Order. Your certificate must come from the state where your tribe is officially recognized, not your current state of residence.
