Key Things to Know About JoSAA Reservations

1

EWS is over and above existing reservations

The 10% EWS reservation is added on top of existing SC/ST/OBC reservations, not carved from them. This is why total reservation exceeds 50% at central institutions.

2

PwD is horizontal, not vertical

PwD reservation doesn't create extra seats — 5% within each category (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) is reserved for PwD candidates. PwD candidates compete within their category first.

3

Home state quota applies at NITs and IIITs

At NITs and IIITs, 50% of seats have a home state quota. Students from the state where the institute is located get preference in these seats.

4

OBC-NCL certificate must be current

OBC-NCL certificates issued after April 1 of the year of admission are valid. Older certificates may be rejected. Ensure the certificate is from a competent authority.

1
What is the OBC-NCL seat reservation in JoSAA 2026?
OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer) candidates get 27% of total seats at all JoSAA participating institutes (IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs). Out of 67,323 total seats, approximately 18,177 seats are reserved for OBC-NCL candidates.
2
How many SC and ST seats are available in JoSAA 2026?
SC candidates get 15% reservation — approximately 10,098 seats out of 67,323. ST candidates get 7.5% — approximately 5,049 seats. These reservations apply uniformly across all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs in JoSAA.
3
How many EWS seats are there in JoSAA 2026?
EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates have a 10% reservation, added above the existing reservations (not carved out from them). Approximately 6,732 seats across JoSAA 2026 are for EWS candidates. EWS candidates need a valid income and asset certificate from a competent authority.
4
What is the General/Open category seat share?
The General (Unreserved/Open) category gets the remaining seats after all reservations — approximately 40.5% of the regular seat pool (before EWS addition). Out of 64,219 regular seats, roughly 26,000–27,000 seats are open to General category candidates.
5
How does PwD (Persons with Disability) reservation work in JoSAA?
PwD candidates get a 5% horizontal reservation — meaning 5% of seats in each category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) are reserved for PwD candidates. It is not an additional seat pool but a sub-allocation within each category. Approximately 3,366 seats across JoSAA 2026 fall under PwD reservation.
