OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes, Non-Creamy Layer) reservation represents the single largest reservation category in JoSAA counselling at 27%, making it a critical piece of the seat matrix for a substantial share of every year's candidate pool. The "Non-Creamy Layer" qualifier is essential and frequently misunderstood — reservation under this category applies specifically to OBC candidates whose family income and status fall below the "creamy layer" threshold (currently ₹8 lakh annual family income, subject to periodic government revision), which means OBC candidates above this threshold, while still formally belonging to an OBC community, are not eligible for the reservation benefit and must compete in the General category instead.

This distinction trips up candidates more often than any other category-related confusion in JoSAA, because it requires understanding that OBC status and OBC-NCL reservation eligibility are not the same thing — the former is a caste/community classification, while the latter additionally requires meeting the income-based non-creamy-layer threshold.
