What Is the KCET Extended Round?

KCET counselling, conducted by KEA (Karnataka Examinations Authority), follows a standard sequence of Round 1, Round 2, and Mop-up round each year to allot engineering, architecture, and other professional degree seats under government quota across Karnataka. In some years, when a significant number of government and government-aided seats remain vacant even after the Mop-up round concludes, KEA opens an additional supplementary round commonly referred to as the "Extended round" or "Extended Mop-up round." This is distinct from a "mock allotment," which is only a preview exercise conducted before Round 1 option entry to help candidates understand their probable allotment — the Extended round is a real, seat-confirming round.

The Extended round is not a guaranteed fixture of every counselling cycle — KEA decides whether to conduct it based on the vacancy position after the regular Mop-up round. For 2026, KEA did conduct this round (as Round 3/Mop-up), with option entry closing September 3 and the allotment result declared September 4, 2026. If you completed the Round 1 allotment and Round 2 process without success, this Extended round was your last opportunity to secure a seat through the centralized KEA counselling system — no further rounds followed.

Eligibility for the Extended round covered candidates who remained unallotted after the Mop-up round, as well as candidates already holding an allotted seat who wished to try upgrading to a vacant seat at a college that opted into the Extended process. KCET 2026 counselling is now fully complete, and classes commenced on September 13, 2026.

Karnataka's reservation framework applies throughout the Extended round exactly as it does in the regular rounds. Candidates are categorized under General, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, SC, ST, and the state's unique Category-1 classification, which covers candidates who studied in Kannada-medium schools in rural parts of Karnataka and qualify for special consideration under Karnataka's reservation policy. In addition, Karnataka has implemented a 7.5% horizontal reservation for candidates from Kannada-medium and rural educational backgrounds, layered on top of the standard vertical reservation categories — this reservation continues to apply to whatever seats are available in the Extended round, just as in Round 1 and Round 2.

On the college side, the Extended round draws from whichever institutions still report unfilled government quota seats. This can include government engineering colleges such as UVCE Bangalore, government-aided colleges, and government quota seats at private, autonomous engineering colleges like RVCE, BMSCE, PES University, and MSRIT that participate in KCET counselling. However, because most high-demand branches (like CSE and ECE at well-known colleges) are typically exhausted by Round 1 or Round 2, the seats available in an Extended round tend to skew toward less-preferred branches, colleges outside major cities, or newer institutions — candidates should calibrate expectations accordingly.

Now that KCET 2026 counselling has concluded, seats that remain unfilled are returned to the respective colleges to be filled through their own management quota channels, following state government guidelines. Candidates who remain unallotted should now look at management quota admissions or COMEDK counselling as parallel options.

How the Extended Round Process Worked

1

KEA Reviews Post-Mop-up Vacancy Position

After the Mop-up round result, KEA compiles a list of colleges and branches with unfilled government/government-aided quota seats. Only if this list is significant does KEA consider opening an Extended round.

2

Official Notification & Vacancy List Published

If KEA decides to proceed, it publishes a notification on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in along with the updated seat matrix showing exactly which colleges and courses have vacancies for the Extended round.

3

Eligible Candidates Submit Fresh Options

Unallotted candidates (and allotted candidates seeking an upgrade) log in and submit choices from the published vacancy list, similar to the option entry process in Round 1 and Round 2.

4

Extended Round Allotment Result

KEA releases the allotment result online. Candidates check their status via login and are expected to report to the allotted college for document verification and admission confirmation within a short deadline.

5

Reporting to College

Allotted candidates must report physically or as instructed to the college, carrying original documents, category certificates, and the allotment order, to confirm the seat before it lapses.

KCET 2026 Extended Round – FAQs

Common questions about the KCET 2026 Extended Round (Extended Mop-Up), eligibility, and dates

1
What is the KCET 2026 Extended Round?
For KCET 2026, KEA (Karnataka Examinations Authority) conducted the Round 3 / Mop-up round as its Extended round to fill remaining vacant government and government-aided engineering seats after Round 1 (July 14) and Round 2 (August 25). Option entry for this round closed September 3, 2026, with the provisional result on September 4 and the final allotment released shortly after. This was confirmed as KEA's last centralized counselling round for the 2026 cycle, with classes commencing September 13, 2026.
2
Who is eligible for the KCET 2026 Extended Round?
Eligibility typically covers two groups: candidates who remained unallotted after the Mop-up round despite valid KCET ranks, and candidates who were allotted a seat but want to try for a vacant seat at a college that has opted into the Extended round. In some years KEA also allows limited fresh registration for candidates who missed earlier rounds, but this is decided year to year and announced only through an official KEA notification on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in.
3
How is the Extended Round different from Round 2 or the Mop-up round?
Round 1, Round 2, and Mop-up follow a fixed, well-publicized schedule that KEA commits to every year as part of the core UGCET calendar. The Extended round, by contrast, is a discretionary add-on — it only happens if a meaningful number of government/government-aided seats remain vacant after Mop-up, and it is usually the last chance to get a seat through KCET counselling before unfilled seats revert to college-level management quota or lapse entirely.
4
When was the KCET 2026 Extended Round held?
Round 1 option entry ran July 6–9 with final allotment on July 14, 2026. Round 2 final allotment followed on August 25, 2026. The Extended/Mop-up (Round 3) round then closed option entry on September 3, 2026, with the provisional result on September 4 — this was KEA's final round of the KCET 2026 cycle, and classes commenced September 13, 2026.
5
Do I need to pay the counselling fee again for the Extended Round?
If you already paid the KCET counselling fee (₹650 for 2A/2B/3A/3B/General, around ₹500 for SC/ST/Category-1) during initial registration, you generally do not pay it again for Extended round participation, since it is part of the same UGCET counselling cycle. However, candidates doing fresh registration specifically for the Extended round (if KEA permits it) may need to pay the registration fee separately. Always confirm the exact fee structure in the official Extended round notification.
6
Are private colleges like RVCE, BMSCE, PES, and MSRIT part of the Extended Round?
Yes, government quota seats at private engineering colleges affiliated with KCET counselling — such as RVCE, BMSCE, PES University, and MSRIT — can appear in the Extended round if vacancies remain after Mop-up. Government colleges like UVCE Bangalore and government-aided colleges are also included when they report unfilled seats. However, the number and quality of seats available in an Extended round is usually limited compared to Round 1, since most high-demand seats are already filled by that stage.
7
What happens to seats that remain vacant even after the Extended Round?
If seats are still vacant after the Extended round (or after Mop-up, if no Extended round is conducted), colleges typically fill them through their own management quota or, for private colleges, through institutional-level counselling outside KEA's process. Government and government-aided college seats that remain unfilled at the end of the KEA cycle may, in some years, be reported back to the state government for further action. This is why candidates are strongly advised to respond promptly at every round rather than waiting for a possible Extended round.
