KCET 2026 Document Checklist

Complete list of documents required for KCET 2026 counselling, document verification & college admission

Why Document Preparation Matters So Much in KCET Counselling

Karnataka's KCET counselling, run by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), is unusual compared to some other state or national counselling systems in how heavily it weighs domicile-related documentation. Because a large share of KCET government quota seats are reserved specifically for candidates who meet Karnataka's residency and study criteria, the document verification stage is not a formality — it is the gatekeeping step that determines whether you can even proceed to choice filling at all. Candidates who show up to document verification with an incomplete set, or with certificates that don't precisely match KEA's required format, risk losing valuable time in a counselling process that runs on a tight, round-based schedule.

Unlike academic marksheets or an Aadhaar card, several of the domicile and category-related certificates on this checklist — particularly the school study certificate, caste certificate, and Horanadu/Gadinadu Kannadiga certificates — are issued by government revenue authorities and can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to process, depending on the taluk or district office's workload. This is precisely why KEA and experienced counsellors consistently advise starting document collection well before KCET results are even announced, rather than waiting until the counselling schedule is published, since by then the verification window is often only a few days long.

Important: Document Verification is Mandatory

Without completing document verification at a KEA help centre, you cannot fill choices or participate in KCET 2026 counselling. Carry all originals plus 3 sets of photocopies. Missing documents can lead to disqualification.

How to Get the 7-Year Study Certificate

1

Identify all schools attended in Karnataka

List every school you attended in Karnataka from Class 1 onwards. The combined duration must be at least 7 years.

2

Visit each school and request the certificate

Contact the Principal of each school. Request a 'School Study Certificate' stating the years you studied there. The certificate must be on school letterhead with principal signature and school seal.

3

Ensure the certificate shows years clearly

The certificate must clearly state 'Studied from [Year] to [Year]' in that school. Vague certificates may be rejected during KEA document verification.

4

Get it for all schools combined = 7+ years

If you studied in 2–3 schools, get certificates from each. The total study period across all certificates must add up to 7+ years in Karnataka.

5

Verify format matches KEA requirements

KEA sometimes provides a prescribed format for the study certificate. Check the official KCET 2026 counselling notification on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in for the required format.

What Happens at the Document Verification Centre

Document verification for KCET typically happens at designated KEA help centres or district facilitation centres, and candidates are assigned a slot after completing online registration. At the centre, an official checks each original document against the details you entered online during registration, verifies that certificates are genuine and current (category certificates, for instance, are usually expected to be issued within a certain validity window, commonly cited as being within the last few years), and confirms that your claimed category and quota eligibility genuinely match your documentation. Only after successful verification are you cleared to proceed to the choice-filling stage of counselling.

If any document is missing, mismatched, or found questionable, KEA officials may grant a short window to rectify it — but this is not guaranteed, and depending on the discrepancy, a candidate can be excluded from that round of counselling entirely. Common issues include a study certificate that doesn't clearly state the exact years of study, a caste certificate that has expired or was issued by an authority outside Karnataka, or a mismatch between the name spelling on different documents (Aadhaar, marksheets, and KCET application). Reviewing every document for these small inconsistencies before your appointment saves considerable stress on verification day.

Frequently Asked Questions – KCET 2026 Documents

Common questions about documents for KCET 2026 counselling

1
What is the study certificate required for KCET 2026 counselling?
The study certificate (also called school study certificate or 7-year study certificate) is issued by the head of the institution where a candidate studied. It must certify that the candidate studied in Karnataka continuously for at least 7 years. This is a mandatory eligibility document for government quota seats. The certificate must be on school letterhead with principal signature and school seal.
2
What is the Horanadu Kannadiga certificate for KCET?
Horanadu Kannadigas are Kannadiga families originally from areas of Karnataka that merged with other states (like parts of Maharashtra or Kerala). A Horanadu Kannadiga certificate is issued by the revenue authority and certifies that the candidate belongs to a Kannadiga family from such border regions. This certificate is required if a candidate cannot meet the regular 7-year study-in-Karnataka criterion but qualifies as a Horanadu Kannadiga.
3
Is the caste certificate mandatory for all KCET 2026 applicants?
Caste certificate (OBC/SC/ST/Category-1/2A/2B/3A/3B) is mandatory only for candidates claiming reservation benefits. General Merit (GM) candidates do not need a caste certificate. However, candidates who have applied under any reserved category during KCET registration must produce a valid caste certificate issued by a Karnataka revenue authority during document verification.
4
How many sets of photocopies should I bring for KCET document verification?
KEA typically requires 2–3 sets of attested photocopies of all documents during document verification at the help centre. Bring originals for verification plus at least 3 sets of photocopies. Self-attest the copies or get them attested by a gazetted officer. Originals are returned after verification; KEA retains one set of copies.
5
What if I don't have an income certificate for EWS or rural quota claim?
Income certificate issued by a Karnataka tehsildar or revenue authority is required for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) claims and certain scholarship-linked categories. For the rural/government school quota, the school study certificate indicating rural/government school study is the primary document — income certificate may not always be separately required. Check the specific KEA document list for your category in the official notification.
