KCET 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Who can apply for KCET 2026 counselling — domicile, academic, age requirements & special category rules
Understanding KCET Eligibility – Why It's More Than Just Marks
KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test) eligibility works differently from many other engineering entrance systems because it layers academic eligibility on top of a domicile-based eligibility framework specific to Karnataka. This means that even a candidate who scores extremely well in the KCET exam and comfortably crosses the minimum PCM percentage requirement is not automatically eligible for government quota seats unless they also satisfy the residency and study criteria set by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). This dual-layer eligibility system exists because government quota seats at Karnataka's engineering colleges are, by policy design, primarily meant to serve students who have a genuine, demonstrated connection to the state through years of schooling there.
For students and parents new to Karnataka's counselling system, this can be a source of confusion, especially if they're used to entrance exams elsewhere in India where domicile plays little to no role in eligibility for standard seats. Understanding exactly which domicile category you fall under — regular Karnataka resident, Horanadu Kannadiga, or Gadinadu Kannadiga — before counselling begins is essential, because it directly determines which certificates you'll need to gather and which category of seats you can realistically compete for.

Karnataka Domicile Requirement – Detailed
Category 1: Regular Karnataka Students
- Candidate must have studied in Karnataka for 7 consecutive or total years
- Study period is typically counted from Class 1 to Class 10 (or equivalent years)
- Evidence: School study certificate from all Karnataka schools attended
- Parents need not necessarily be Karnataka residents if the candidate studied in Karnataka
Category 2: Horanadu Kannadigas
- Families originally from Karnataka border areas merged with Maharashtra, Kerala, etc.
- Exempt from 7-year study-in-Karnataka requirement
- Must produce Horanadu Kannadiga certificate from competent revenue authority
- Common examples: Kannadiga families from Kasargod (Kerala), Solapur district (Maharashtra)
Category 3: Gadinadu Kannadigas
- Kannadiga families in border districts of Karnataka with ancestral ties
- Must produce Gadinadu Kannadiga certificate from district authority
- Exempt from 7-year study-in-Karnataka requirement
- Subject to specific district and family origin conditions as defined by Karnataka government
Government Quota vs SNQ Seats – Who Qualifies?
| Seat Type | % of Total | Eligibility | Process |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government Quota (CET Seats) | ~60–65% | Karnataka domicile; 7-year study OR Horanadu/Gadinadu Kannadiga | Through KCET counselling on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in |
| SNQ (Special NRI Quota) | ~3–5% | NRI candidates or children of NRIs; no Karnataka domicile needed | Direct application through colleges; higher fee |
| Management Quota | ~30–35% | Any Indian citizen (in private unaided colleges); college's own merit list | Apply directly to college; higher fee |
Government Quota vs SNQ vs Management Quota — Why the Distinction Matters
Karnataka's engineering seat structure is split across three broad pathways, and understanding which one you're eligible for shapes your entire approach to admission. Government quota (also called CET seats) forms the majority of seats at most colleges and is filled purely through the KCET counselling process on merit rank, but is restricted to candidates meeting the domicile requirements. The Special NRI Quota (SNQ) opens a separate, smaller pool of seats to NRI candidates or children of NRIs regardless of Karnataka domicile, though typically at a significantly higher fee, and is generally administered directly by the colleges rather than through the centralised KEA counselling rank list. Management quota seats, found mainly in private unaided colleges, are open to any Indian citizen without the Karnataka study requirement, filled by the college's own process and priced independently of the government-regulated fee structure.
A common misconception is that a student who hasn't studied in Karnataka for 7 years and isn't a Horanadu or Gadinadu Kannadiga simply cannot access Karnataka engineering colleges at all — this isn't accurate. Such a student can still appear for KCET and, depending on their rank and finances, pursue admission through management quota or SNQ pathways at the same colleges, just outside the reserved government quota counselling system. Recognising which pool you fall into early avoids wasted effort chasing seats you aren't eligible for through KCET counselling specifically.
Important Eligibility Points
Appearing candidates eligible
Candidates who appeared in Class 12 in 2026 and are awaiting results can participate in KCET. Final admission is subject to meeting the PCM minimum percentage in actual results.
No year gap restriction
There is no restriction on year gap for KCET 2026. Students who passed Class 12 in earlier years (e.g., 2024 or 2025) and appear for KCET 2026 are also eligible.
Both CET and JEE Main scores accepted
Karnataka colleges accept both KCET rank for government quota and JEE Main rank for some seat categories. JEE Main rank holders can also appear in KCET and participate in counselling.
Diploma holders (lateral entry)
Diploma holders seeking lateral entry to second year B.E. have separate eligibility criteria and a separate counselling process (DCET — Diploma CET). This is different from KCET.
Minimum marks in individual subjects
In addition to 45% aggregate in PCM, some colleges and courses may require minimum marks in individual subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Math separately). Check specific college requirements.
Age and Academic Eligibility — Practical Notes
While the minimum age requirement of 17 years is fairly standard across most engineering entrance systems in India, the absence of an upper age limit for KCET is worth noting, since some other exams do impose one. This makes KCET accessible to candidates re-attempting entrance exams after a gap, career-changers pursuing engineering later, or students who took a longer path through school for any reason. That said, individual colleges or specific specialised programs may occasionally apply their own supplementary conditions, so it's worth double-checking with your target institute directly if your situation is non-standard.
On the academic side, the PCM percentage threshold is a floor, not a competitive benchmark — meeting the minimum 45% (or 40% for SC/ST/Category-1 candidates) makes you technically eligible to participate in counselling, but it says nothing about which colleges or branches you can realistically expect to get through KCET rank-based allotment. Aspirants sometimes conflate "eligible to apply" with "likely to get a good seat," which are very different things; your actual admission chances depend on your KCET rank relative to the closing ranks of your target branches and colleges, not merely on clearing the eligibility bar.
Who is NOT Eligible for KCET Government Quota?
- Students who have not studied in Karnataka at all and do not have Horanadu/Gadinadu status
- Candidates without PCM in Class 12 (e.g., Biology or Commerce stream without Maths)
- Candidates below 17 years of age as of 31 December 2026
- Candidates who did not appear in KCET 2026 exam
- Candidates who already have a Bachelor's degree (not eligible for first-year admission)
