How to Fill KCET 2026 Choices – Step by Step
Login to cetonline.karnataka.gov.in
Use your KCET application number and date of birth as credentials. Ensure you have completed registration and document verification before accessing the choice filling module.
Access the Choice Filling Module
Navigate to 'Choice Filling' in the counselling dashboard. The portal shows all available colleges with their seat availability, category-wise, and branch-wise.
Research Colleges Before Filling
Use the KCET College Predictor tool and previous year cutoffs to shortlist realistic colleges. Understand category-wise cutoffs for your rank. Make a list offline before logging in.
Add Choices in Preference Order
Search for colleges by name, district, or branch. Add each college-course combination to your list. Arrange them strictly in your order of preference — most preferred at the top.
Fill Aspirational + Safe + Safety-Net Choices
Include a mix: 20% aspirational (slight stretch), 50% realistic (within cutoff range), 30% safety-net (well within reach). Minimum 50 choices recommended; 80+ is ideal.
Reorder and Verify
Drag and reorder choices until you are satisfied. Review the order carefully — the system allots the highest-preference seat available for your rank.
Lock Choices
Click 'Lock Choices' to finalise. This is IRREVERSIBLE. Take a screenshot or print the PDF of locked choices for your records.
Upgrade vs Freeze — Which to Choose?
| Option | What It Means | When to Choose |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze | You accept Round 1 seat permanently. No Round 2 participation. College reporting is mandatory. | Your Round 1 seat is your top preference or very close to it. You don't want to risk losing it. |
| Upgrade | You accept Round 1 seat temporarily but participate in Round 2 seeking a better seat. If you get a better seat, you move; if not, Round 1 seat is retained. | Your Round 1 seat is good but not your top choice. Your actual top choices had cutoffs slightly higher than your rank. |
| Surrender (Opt Out) | You reject the Round 1 seat entirely and do not want to continue in this round's allotment. | Only if you have a confirmed better option elsewhere (e.g., NIT via JoSAA). Risky — you may end up without a seat. |
Pro Tip
If you get a seat in Round 1 that is not your absolute first choice, almost always choose Upgrade. The Upgrade option is risk-free — you cannot go to a worse seat than what you already have. If Round 2 has nothing better, you keep your Round 1 seat.
Rank-wise Choice Filling Strategy
Rank 1–5,000
You have access to top CSE seats at RV College, BMSCE, PES University, MSRIT. Fill these first. Add ECE/ISE at these colleges as fallback. Also add CSE at second-tier colleges like BIT, DSCE, Dayananda Sagar for safety.
Rank 5,001–15,000
CSE at top colleges may be tight. Focus on ECE/ISE at RV, BMSCE, PES, MSRIT. CSE at second-tier colleges like BIT, NIE, AIT is realistic. Fill 60+ choices across preferred branches.
Rank 15,001–30,000
Look at CSE/ISE at mid-tier private colleges. ECE at top colleges is a stretch but worth adding. Government engineering colleges (UVCE, GEC) are strong options. Fill 80+ choices.
Rank 30,001–60,000
Government colleges like UVCE, GEC Ramanagara, GEC Hassan are strong targets. CSE/ISE at smaller private colleges is feasible. Fill maximum choices — location flexibility helps significantly.
Rank 60,001+
Focus on government-aided colleges and newer private colleges. Civil, Mechanical, or less-competitive branches at decent colleges are realistic. Fill as many choices as possible across all districts.
Common Choice Filling Mistakes to Avoid
Filling too few choices
Fill minimum 50 choices. With fewer options, you risk getting no allotment if your top choices are filled before your rank is processed.
Wrong preference order
Always put your truly most preferred option first. The system allots the best available seat from the top of your list downward.
Not researching category-wise cutoffs
Your category (GM, OBC, SC, 2A, etc.) significantly affects eligibility. Check your category's cutoff, not just the general cutoff.
Forgetting to include government colleges
Government engineering colleges in Karnataka (UVCE, GEC) have lower fees and decent placements. Always include them in your list.
Locking too early without review
Take your time. The system allows editing until you lock or the deadline passes. Review the full list at least twice before locking.
