KCET 2026 Round 2 Seat Allotment

Upgrades, eligibility, extended round & final admission steps after KCET 2026 Round 2 result

How Round 2 Fits Into the Overall KCET Allotment Process

KCET counselling, like most rank-based seat allotment systems in India, runs across multiple sequential rounds rather than settling everything in a single pass. Round 2 exists specifically to redistribute seats that become available after Round 1 — either because a candidate who chose to upgrade got moved to a better option (freeing up their original seat), or because some allotted candidates didn't complete acceptance, fee payment, or reporting formalities and effectively dropped out of the process. This dynamic is exactly why closing ranks for most colleges and branches tend to relax between Round 1 and Round 2, sometimes meaningfully, giving candidates who didn't get their preferred options in Round 1 a genuine second opportunity.

Understanding your own status after Round 1 — whether you were allotted a seat and chose to upgrade or freeze, or whether you received no allotment at all — is the first step to knowing what to expect in Round 2, since KEA's system treats each of these situations differently. The distinctions below cover exactly who is automatically carried forward into Round 2 consideration and who has already exited the counselling process for that cycle.

Who Participates in KCET 2026 Round 2?

Candidates who chose Upgrade after Round 1

If you accepted your Round 1 seat and chose 'Upgrade', you automatically participate in Round 2. The system tries to allot you a higher-preference seat from your original choice list. If a better seat opens up due to cancellations or seat vacancies, you are moved up.

Candidates with no Round 1 allotment

If you did not receive any seat in Round 1, you automatically participate in Round 2. Your locked choice list is used. More seats open up as some Round 1 candidates do not accept or surrender their seats.

Candidates who chose Freeze after Round 1

If you chose Freeze, you confirmed your Round 1 seat and opted out of further upgrades. You do NOT participate in Round 2. Your admission is at the Round 1 allotted college.

Candidates who surrendered / rejected Round 1

If you rejected or surrendered your Round 1 seat, you may or may not be eligible for Round 2 depending on KEA policy. Surrendering a seat is risky and generally not recommended unless you have a confirmed better option elsewhere.

After KCET Round 2 Allotment – Step by Step

1

Check Round 2 allotment result

Login to cetonline.karnataka.gov.in. Check if you got an upgrade (better seat) or retained your Round 1 seat (if you had one).

2

Scenario A: Got an upgrade in Round 2

You have been moved to a better seat. Accept the new allotment online, pay the acceptance fee for the new seat, and report to the newly allotted college with original documents.

3

Scenario B: No upgrade — Round 1 seat retained

If you had a Round 1 seat and no upgrade came in Round 2, your original Round 1 seat is confirmed. Ensure you complete reporting to the Round 1 college within its original deadline (if not already done).

4

Scenario C: Still no seat after Round 2

Participate in the Mop-up round. Register on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in for the Mop-up (fresh registration may be required). Fill choices from available seats and await allotment.

5

Final college reporting

After Round 2 or Mop-up, report to the allotted college with all original documents. Pay the balance college fee. Collect your admission confirmation letter. Submit TC and migration certificate if needed.

Deciding Whether to Freeze or Continue to the Mop-Up Round

If your Round 1 seat is retained after Round 2 (meaning no upgrade came through), you'll face a decision about whether to accept that seat and report to the college, or continue holding out for the mop-up round in hopes of a better option. This decision depends heavily on how close your current seat is to what you actually want and how much risk you're comfortable taking. Since the mop-up round is specifically designed to fill genuinely vacant seats after the regular counselling rounds conclude, the options available there are, by definition, seats that weren't filled through the normal process — which sometimes means less popular colleges or branches, though occasionally it can include seats vacated late by candidates who withdrew for other reasons like joining COMEDK, private colleges, or institutes outside Karnataka.

A practical approach many counsellors recommend is to complete reporting and secure your Round 2 seat first if you're required to (some counselling systems require you to confirm and pay for your current seat even while you consider further rounds), and only skip participating further if you're genuinely satisfied. Losing an already-secured seat by holding out for a mop-up round that may not offer anything better is a real risk, so weigh the marginal upside of waiting against the certainty of the seat you already have in hand.

Common Pitfalls Candidates Face During Round 2

A frequent mistake is confusing the mechanics of the Upgrade option with an assumption that you'll always end up better off — while it is true you can never be moved to a worse seat, candidates sometimes overestimate how likely an upgrade actually is for their specific choice list position, and end up disappointed when Round 2 simply confirms their Round 1 seat. It helps to review your original choice list order carefully and set realistic expectations based on how far up the list your Round 1 allotment fell — if you were already close to the top of your preferences, the room for further upgrade in Round 2 is naturally limited.

Another common issue is missing the fee payment or reporting deadline after Round 2 due to assuming there's more time than there actually is. KEA's counselling deadlines are generally tight and non-negotiable, and failing to act within the window — whether for accepting an upgraded seat or confirming a retained Round 1 seat — can result in forfeiting your admission altogether. Keep a close eye on official KEA communication (SMS, email, and the counselling portal itself) throughout this period rather than relying on informal sources for deadline information.

Frequently Asked Questions – KCET 2026 Round 2 Allotment

Common questions about KCET 2026 Round 2 seat allotment and final admission

1
Who is eligible for KCET 2026 Round 2?
Round 2 is for: (1) Candidates who chose Upgrade after Round 1 allotment — they automatically participate seeking a better seat, (2) Candidates who were not allotted any seat in Round 1 — they also participate automatically with their original locked choices. Candidates who chose Freeze after Round 1 do NOT participate in Round 2.
2
Can I get a worse seat in KCET Round 2 compared to Round 1?
No. If you chose Upgrade after Round 1, you cannot be allotted a seat worse than your Round 1 seat. The upgrade mechanism only moves you to a higher-preference seat from your choice list. If no better seat is available in Round 2, your Round 1 seat is retained automatically.
3
What is the KCET 2026 extended round or mop-up round?
The Mop-up round is conducted after Round 2 to fill remaining vacant seats. It is open to candidates who were not allotted any seat in Rounds 1 and 2. Some years KEA also conducts an Extended Mop-up round if seats remain after the regular Mop-up. The Mop-up round may require fresh registration on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in.
4
Do I need to pay the seat acceptance fee again in Round 2?
If you get a better seat in Round 2 (an upgrade), you need to pay the seat acceptance fee for the new seat. The Round 1 fee may be adjusted or an additional payment required — this depends on the college fee structure. KEA publishes the exact fee adjustment policy in the official counselling notification.
5
What happens to my Round 1 seat if I don't report to Round 2 allotted college?
If you chose Upgrade, accepted Round 2 allotment, paid the fee but did not report to the college, your admission is forfeited. If you chose Upgrade but Round 2 gave no better seat, your Round 1 seat is retained and you must report to the Round 1 college by its reporting deadline. Not reporting to any allotted college leads to cancellation of all seats and disqualification from further rounds.
