JoSAA 2026 – Should You Add GFTIs in Your Choice List?

What Are GFTIs in JoSAA?
GFTIs — Government Funded Technical Institutes — are centrally or state government-funded engineering colleges that participate in JoSAA counselling but are neither IITs nor NITs. They are a distinct third category in the JoSAA system.
54 GFTIs participate in JoSAA 2026. These range from historic institutes like IIEST Shibpur (established 1856) to regional institutes like NERIST (Arunachal Pradesh) and NIT-equivalent institutes in smaller states. Some examples:
- IIEST Shibpur, West Bengal (one of Asia's oldest engineering colleges)
- Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology (SLIET), Punjab
- NERIST – North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Arunachal Pradesh
- Assam University Institute of Engineering, Silchar
- Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya Faculty of Engineering, Haridwar
GFTIs are governed by the same JoSAA allotment process — reservation policies, round-wise allotment, freeze/float/slide — as IITs and NITs. The seat acceptance fee and document verification process are also the same.
GFTI Closing Ranks 2025 (Sample — General Category)

|---|---|---|
| IIEST Shibpur | Computer Science & Engineering | ~28,000 |
| IIEST Shibpur | Electrical Engineering | ~52,000 |
| SLIET Longowal | Computer Science & Engineering | ~1,20,000 |
| SLIET Longowal | Electronics & Communication | ~1,60,000 |

Top GFTIs Worth Adding in JoSAA 2026
IIEST Shibpur (Howrah, WB)
Top GFTIEstablished in 1856, IIEST Shibpur is one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia and the best GFTI overall. Strong in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Excellent placement records in West Bengal and among PSUs. CSE closes around rank 25,000–30,000 (General, AI).
ISM Dhanbad (now IIT ISM)
Now an IITISM Dhanbad was upgraded to IIT status in 2016 and now appears as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in JoSAA. Exceptional for Mining Engineering and Petroleum Engineering with strong PSU placement (Coal India, ONGC, IOCL). If you want these sectors, it is arguably the best choice in India.
SLIET Longowal (Punjab)
Regional StrengthSant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology is a well-known GFTI with good infrastructure. Strong for candidates from Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh looking for affordable quality education. Accessible for ranks in the 1–1.5 lakh range.
NERIST (Arunachal Pradesh)
NE RegionNorth Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology is a good option for ST candidates and candidates from Northeast India. Limited seats but a functioning technical institute with reasonable infrastructure.
When You Should Add GFTIs
Definitely add GFTIs if:
- • Your JEE Main rank is above 30,000 (General category) — GFTIs ensure you have backup seats.
- • Your primary targets are NITs but you want to guarantee at least some allotment.
- • You are open to lesser-known institutes if the branch and fees are right.
- • You want maximum options and peace of mind — adding GFTIs costs nothing.
Even if IIEST Shibpur CSE closes at rank 28,000 for General, it ensures that a candidate with rank 40,000 still has a solid fallback. Without GFTIs in the list, candidates in this range risk leaving the JoSAA process with no allotment at all — a situation that can be avoided easily.
When You Might Skip GFTIs
Consider skipping if:
- • Your rank is under 5,000 — GFTIs are far below your target range; NITs and IITs already serve as backups.
- • You have a clear preference for specific high-tier institutes and would rather wait for state counselling than attend a GFTI.
- • Space in your choice list is a concern (though JoSAA allows many choices, so this is rarely a real constraint).
Even if your rank is under 5,000, there is no downside to adding 5–10 GFTIs at the very bottom of your list. The algorithm will only use them if every higher-priority choice is out of reach — which at that rank range is essentially impossible.
