GFTIs
JoSAA 2026 GFTI List – Complete List of GFTIs with Seats
Government Funded Technical Institutes in JoSAA — what they are, which ones to add, and when they make excellent safety net choices
What Are GFTIs?
GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) are centrally-funded engineering and technical institutions that participate in JoSAA counselling but are neither IITs nor NITs. There are approximately 33 GFTIs in JoSAA 2026, offering around 5,000 seats total.
Key characteristics of GFTIs:
- Funded by the Central Government (like NITs) but not under the NIT Act
- No home state quota — all seats are All India category
- Generally lower closing ranks than NITs (easier to get in)
- Quality varies significantly — IIEST Shibpur and ICT Mumbai are excellent; others are more regional in nature
- JoSAA seat acceptance fee and process is identical to NITs

When to Add GFTIs in Your Choice List
GFTIs serve as excellent safety net choices. Here is when to add them and where in your list:
- Rank above 20,000: Add IIEST Shibpur and ICT Mumbai as mid-list choices alongside lower-tier NITs.
- Rank 20,000–50,000: GFTIs like BIT Mesra, BIT Sindri, BIT Patna, and SLIET become realistic mid-tier options.
- Rank above 50,000: Add NE-region GFTIs (Tezpur, NERIST) at the bottom of your list as insurance.
- Always add GFTIs below your expected realistic NIT allotment — they are backups, not primary targets.
1What is the difference between a GFTI and an NIT?
GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) are centrally-funded institutes that are neither IITs nor NITs. They participate in JoSAA counselling but are generally ranked below NITs in terms of placement, infrastructure, and academic reputation. Examples include IIEST Shibpur, BIT Mesra, NIFTEM, and SPA Delhi. Some GFTIs like IIEST Shibpur are highly regarded in specific branches.
2Is IIEST Shibpur better than some NITs?
IIEST Shibpur (formerly BE College Shibpur) is one of India's oldest engineering institutions (established 1856) and is considered on par with lower-ranked NITs. In certain branches like Civil and Mechanical Engineering, IIEST has strong placement records and alumni networks. Its JoSAA closing ranks for CSE are typically in the 10,000–18,000 range.
3Do GFTIs also have home state quota?
GFTIs do NOT have the 50% home state reservation that NITs have. GFTIs allocate seats on an All India basis (similar to IITs). This means there is no home state advantage at GFTIs — all candidates compete in the same pool regardless of their state.
4What closing rank range can get a GFTI seat?
GFTI closing ranks vary widely. Top GFTIs like IIEST Shibpur CSE close around 10,000–18,000 in the General category. Less competitive branches at GFTIs like BIT Sindri or NERIST can close as high as 80,000–120,000. This wide range makes GFTIs excellent safety net choices for all rank bands.
5Should I add GFTIs in my JoSAA choice list?
Yes — especially as backup/safety net choices at the bottom of your list. GFTIs are government-funded institutes with decent infrastructure and central government recognition. Getting a seat at a GFTI through JoSAA is significantly better than having no allotment. Add relevant GFTIs according to your rank range.
