1
How many total seats are there in JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA 2026 is expected to have approximately 53,000–55,000 seats across all participating institutes: ~17,000 in IITs, ~23,000 in NITs, ~8,000 in IIITs, and ~5,000 in GFTIs. The exact count varies slightly each year as new branches are added and institutes expand capacity.
2
Which IIT has the most seats?
IIT Kharagpur is the largest IIT with approximately 2,000+ undergraduate seats per year. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur each have roughly 800–1,200 seats. Newer IITs (established post-2008) typically have 400–600 seats each.
3
How are JoSAA seats distributed by category?
The central reservation policy applies: General/Open (UR) 40.5% (effectively 40% after EWS reservation), OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%. PwD (Persons with Disability) gets a horizontal 5% reservation across all categories. DS (Defence Service) gets a small supernumerary allocation.
4
Are IIT seats for girls supernumerary?
Yes — IITs have a supernumerary (extra) seat policy for female candidates to ensure at least 20% female enrollment. These extra seats are added on top of the regular intake, meaning more seats are created for female candidates rather than displacing male candidates. This policy has been in place since 2018–19.
5
Do NIT seats increase every year?
NIT seat counts are relatively stable year-over-year, with marginal increases as institutes add new branches or expand existing ones. Most NITs have between 600 and 1,200 total seats. NIT Calicut, NIT Warangal, and NIT Trichy are among the larger NITs with 900+ seats each.
