JoSAA Ranks
JoSAA 2026 – Category Rank vs AIR Rank: What's the Difference?
AIR is your rank among all candidates. Category rank is within your category. Both determine different seats in JoSAA — here is exactly how
AIR vs Category Rank — Side by Side
AIR (All India Rank / CRL)
- Rank among ALL candidates
- Used for UR/Open category seats
- Higher number (worse) for reserved category students
- Printed on JEE scorecard
Category Rank (OBC/SC/ST/EWS)
- Rank within your specific category only
- Used for reserved category seats
- Almost always a lower (better) number than AIR
- Also printed on JEE scorecard
Real Example: How JoSAA Uses Both Ranks
Suppose a candidate has: AIR 25,000 and OBC-NCL Category Rank 7,500.
In JoSAA choice filling, they add two entries for NIT Warangal CSE:
- NIT Warangal CSE – UR category: Requires AIR 25,000 or better. NIT Warangal CSE UR closing rank is typically ~3,000. This candidate (AIR 25,000) CANNOT get this seat.
- NIT Warangal CSE – OBC-NCL category: Requires OBC-NCL rank 7,500 or better. NIT Warangal CSE OBC-NCL closing rank is typically ~9,000–12,000. This candidate (OBC rank 7,500) CAN get this seat.
By including both entries in the choice list, the candidate can access seats that their AIR alone could never achieve. This is why reserved category candidates should always add category-specific entries in their JoSAA choices.

1What is CRL in JEE Main and JoSAA?
CRL stands for Common Rank List — it is the same as AIR (All India Rank). It is the overall rank computed across all candidates who appeared in JEE Main, regardless of category. CRL rank 1 is the topper among all candidates. JoSAA uses CRL to fill open/UR category seats.
2My OBC-NCL rank is 5,000 but my AIR is 20,000. Which one matters?
Both matter for different seats. Your AIR of 20,000 is used for open/UR category seats. Your OBC-NCL category rank of 5,000 is used for OBC-NCL reserved seats. Since OBC-NCL reserved seats are filled using only OBC-NCL candidates, your rank of 5,000 among OBC candidates means you can access seats that require an OBC rank around 5,000 — far better than AIR 20,000 for UR seats.
3Can I apply for both UR seats and OBC-NCL seats using JoSAA?
Yes — JoSAA automatically considers you for both. When you fill choices on josaa.nic.in, each branch-college combination shows multiple entries: one for UR (all candidates compete), and one for OBC-NCL (only OBC-NCL candidates compete). You should add both in your choice list — put the UR entry above if you want it more, or OBC-NCL entry above if that seems more realistic.
4Is there a category rank for EWS candidates?
Yes — EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates get a separate EWS rank in JEE Main, similar to OBC/SC/ST categories. EWS reserved seats (10% of total) are filled using the EWS rank. EWS candidates should add EWS category entries in their JoSAA choice list alongside UR entries.
5Does PwD (Person with Disability) have a separate rank?
PwD is a horizontal reservation, not a separate rank list. PwD candidates compete within their own category (UR-PwD, OBC-PwD, SC-PwD, ST-PwD) and the same AIR/category rank applies. Each category has 5% of seats reserved for PwD candidates. JoSAA automatically applies PwD reservation if you have declared your disability during JEE registration.
