Home State Quota

JoSAA 2026 NIT Home State Quota – How It Works

NITs reserve 50% seats for home state candidates — HS vs OS rank differences, how to determine your home state, and how to use it in choice filling

The 50% Seat Reservation Rule

Every NIT reserves 50% of its seats for Home State (HS) candidates and the remaining 50% for Other State (OS) candidates. This applies to all categories (General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS/PwD) — each category's seats are further split 50/50 between HS and OS.

The NIT Trichy example across multiple years shows that the HS closing rank for CSE is consistently 2–3x worse than the OS closing rank. This means the home state quota can be a massive advantage if your home state NIT is a top-ranked one.

HS vs OS Closing Rank — Why It Matters

NIT + BranchOS Closing RankHS Closing RankAdvantage
NIT Trichy – CSE~2,500~6,0002.4x
NIT Warangal – CSE~3,000~7,5002.5x
NIT Surathkal – CSE~3,500~9,0002.6x

How to Use HS Quota in JoSAA Choice Filling

When filling choices on josaa.nic.in, you will see separate line items for each branch at each NIT, differentiated by quota (HS or OS) and category. Here is how to use this effectively:

  1. Identify your home state NIT(s) — the NITs in the same state where you passed Class 12.
  2. For your home state NIT, add both the HS and OS entries for each branch you want. Put the HS entry above the OS entry in your preference order (HS is usually easier to get).
  3. For non-home-state NITs, only the OS quota applies to you — the HS category seats are not available.
  4. Example: A Tamil Nadu student should add NIT Trichy CSE (HS) above NIT Trichy CSE (OS) in their choice list.
1
What is my home state for NIT quota purposes?
Your home state is the state in which you passed your Class 12 (or equivalent) examination. It is NOT determined by your current residence, birth state, or domicile certificate. If you studied in a school in Maharashtra and passed Class 12 from Maharashtra board, your home state is Maharashtra regardless of where you were born or currently live.
2
How much better are NIT home state closing ranks vs other state?
Home state (HS) closing ranks are typically 2–4x higher (worse rank number) than other state (OS) closing ranks for the same NIT and branch. For example, if NIT Trichy CSE OS closing rank is 2,500, the HS closing rank may be around 5,000–8,000. This means a rank of 6,000 can get CSE at NIT Trichy under HS quota but not under OS.
3
How do I claim home state quota in JoSAA 2026?
You do not need to do anything special — JoSAA automatically applies home state quota based on your Class 12 institution's state as entered during registration. When you fill choices on josaa.nic.in, you will see separate entries for each NIT branch under HS and OS categories. Add both — especially the HS category entry for your home state NIT.
4
Can I claim home state quota at multiple NITs?
No — you can claim home state quota only at the NIT located in your home state. For example, if your home state is Tamil Nadu, only NIT Trichy and NIT Tiruchirappalli are your home state NITs. At all other NITs, you will be considered under the Other State (OS) quota.
5
What documents prove home state for NIT admission?
The primary document is your Class 12 school leaving certificate or bonafide certificate showing the school's state. Some institutes may also ask for the Class 12 marksheet and admit card (which shows the school's address). A domicile certificate alone is generally not sufficient — the school location is what matters.
