JoSAA 2026 IIT Home State Quota – IITs Use AIR Only, No State Quota

IITs have no home state quota — all seats at all 23 IITs are allotted purely on JEE Advanced All India Rank.

IITs Have No Home State Quota — AIR Determines Everything

Unlike NITs which divide 50% seats for home state and 50% for other states, IITs have no home state reservation. All 23 IITs — from IIT Bombay to IIT Dharwad — admit candidates purely based on JEE Advanced All India Rank (AIR). A student from any state in India competes equally for any IIT seat.

This is a fundamental difference between the IIT and NIT admission systems. When using our college predictor or analyzing cutoffs for IITs, you never need to specify your home state — the cutoff applies uniformly to all candidates in the same category.

IIT Home State Quota – FAQs

Common questions about IIT home state quota in JoSAA 2026

1
Do IITs have home state quota in JoSAA 2026?
No. IITs do not have home state quota. All IIT admissions through JoSAA 2026 are based on JEE Advanced All India Rank (AIR) only. There is no preference for candidates from the state where the IIT is located. A student from Assam competes on equal footing with a student from Maharashtra for IIT Bombay — your JEE Advanced rank is the only criterion (apart from category-based reservation).
2
Why don't IITs have home state quota while NITs do?
NITs were established to serve regional technical education needs, hence the 50% home state reservation to ensure local access. IITs, on the other hand, were established as national institutions of excellence with a mandate for all-India merit-based selection. IIT Act provisions do not include state-based reservations. Admission to all IITs is purely based on JEE Advanced merit rank, making IIT admissions state-agnostic.
3
What reservations do IITs have in JoSAA 2026?
IITs observe central government statutory reservations: 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 10% EWS, and 5% PwD horizontal reservation. Additionally, IITs have supernumerary seats for female candidates (typically 20% female in total intake, created by adding seats above the sanctioned intake). There is no home state, local area, or regional reservation at IITs — only category and gender-based reservations.
4
Does choosing IIT in my home state give any advantage?
No. If you are from West Bengal and choose IIT Kharagpur, you have no advantage over a student from Kerala. Your JEE Advanced rank and category determine your eligibility for each program. The only indirect advantage of choosing a nearby IIT is practical — proximity reduces travel costs and may be more convenient for family visits. But in terms of the admission process, there is zero home state advantage at IITs.
5
Is JEE Advanced rank valid across all IITs equally?
Yes. JEE Advanced rank is a single national rank valid for all 23 IITs simultaneously. All IITs participate in a common JoSAA counselling with a single choice list. Your rank determines which programs you can access — a rank of 500 can get you into IIT Bombay programs that close before rank 500, and you compete for the same IIT Bombay seat regardless of which state you are from. NIT admissions work differently — the same JEE Main rank has different competitiveness in HS and OS quotas.
