JoSAA 2026 NIT Home State Quota – HS vs OS Seats Explained

How 50% home state and 50% other state seats work at NITs — eligibility, cutoff differences, and strategy.

NIT Home State Quota: The 50/50 Rule

Every NIT must reserve 50% of its seats for Home State candidates and 50% for Other State candidates. This rule was introduced to ensure that NITs serve their host state while also maintaining a national character. The home state is determined by the state of your Class 12 board — if you passed Class 12 from a Tamil Nadu board, you qualify as Home State at NIT Trichy.

Importantly, this creates two separate admission pools. If you are a Home State candidate with a JEE Main rank of 5,000, you compete for NIT Trichy CSE HS seats against other Tamil Nadu students with similar ranks — not against students from other states who fall in the OS pool.

Common questions about NIT home state quota in JoSAA 2026

What is home state quota in NIT admissions?
NITs reserve 50% of seats for candidates from the home state (the state where the NIT is geographically located) and 50% for candidates from other states. Home state (HS) is determined by the state of the qualifying board exam (Class 12). If your Class 12 board is from Tamil Nadu, you qualify for home state quota at NIT Trichy (Tamil Nadu). Your JEE Main state is also considered in some cases — NTA assigns the home state at registration.

Which state qualifies as home state for major NITs?
Each NIT has a defined home state: NIT Trichy → Tamil Nadu; NIT Warangal → Telangana; NIT Surathkal → Karnataka; MNIT Jaipur → Rajasthan; NIT Calicut → Kerala; NIT Rourkela → Odisha; MNNIT Allahabad → Uttar Pradesh; NIT Delhi → Delhi; VNIT Nagpur → Maharashtra; NIT Bhopal (MANIT) → Madhya Pradesh. Your home state is determined by where you completed Class 12, not where you currently live.

Is home state quota better or worse than other state quota?
It depends on the NIT. For top NITs (NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal), the home state closing ranks can be similar to or even tighter than other state ranks in popular branches, because local students strongly prefer their home NIT. For less popular NITs or non-CSE branches, OS quota may actually be easier to get (higher closing rank), as demand from outside the state is lower. Always compare HS and OS cutoffs separately for each NIT.

Can I apply for home state quota at multiple NITs?
You are classified as Home State for only one NIT (the one in your home state). For all other NITs, you are automatically Other State. You can fill choices for both HS and OS programs in the same JoSAA choice list — the system knows your home state from your registration and assigns you to the correct quota automatically. There is no need to apply separately.

Does home state quota apply to all categories (SC, OBC, EWS) in NITs?
Yes. The 50% HS / 50% OS division applies within each category. So NIT Trichy CSE has approximately 50% of General seats as HS, 50% as OS. Similarly for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and EWS. Each category's seats are divided by home state. PwD seats are further subdivided within these. Category reservation and home state quota are applied together — you compete in your specific HS/OS and category combination.
