JoSAA Seat Acceptance Fee — Amount, Categories & Payment Process

What you pay to accept a JoSAA seat, when it's due, and how it's adjusted later

What Is the Seat Acceptance Fee?

After every JoSAA round, candidates who are allotted a seat must pay a seat acceptance fee within a short deadline to confirm they want to hold onto that seat and continue in the counselling process (via Freeze, Float, or Slide). This fee is distinct from the institute's actual tuition and hostel fees, which are paid separately at the time of reporting.

The fee amount differs by category — candidates in SC/ST/PwD categories typically pay a lower amount than General/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates. Exact figures change year to year and are published in the JoSAA information brochure, so always check the current year's number on josaa.nic.in rather than assuming a previous year's figure carries over unchanged.

When and How to Pay

After each round's result is declared, you get a defined window — usually 2-3 days — to pay the seat acceptance fee online through the JoSAA portal using net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI. Missing this window results in automatic cancellation of your allotted seat, with no further recourse in most cases.

Once paid for your first allotment, you do not need to pay it again in later rounds even if you get upgraded via Float or Slide — it is a one-time payment for the counselling cycle, not a per-round fee.

Is It Refundable?

A portion of the seat acceptance fee is adjusted against your institute's tuition fee if you join and continue at the allotted institute. If you withdraw from the process before the withdrawal deadline, the fee is refunded minus a fixed non-refundable processing charge — see our JoSAA refund policy page for the full breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions – JoSAA Seat Acceptance Fee

Common questions about the JoSAA seat acceptance fee

1
How much is the JoSAA seat acceptance fee?
The seat acceptance fee is typically split into two components — a partial amount for candidates from SC/ST/PwD categories and a higher amount for all other categories (General, EWS, OBC-NCL). Exact figures are published fresh each year in the JoSAA information brochure and have historically been in the range of a few thousand rupees to around Rs 20,000, so always confirm against the current brochure at josaa.nic.in rather than relying on a past year's number.
2
When do I need to pay the seat acceptance fee?
You must pay the seat acceptance fee within the window specified after each round's seat allotment result — typically a short 2-3 day window. Missing this deadline means your allotted seat is cancelled and you are removed from further rounds, so mark the exact date on the JoSAA schedule immediately after your result is out.
3
Is the seat acceptance fee refundable?
Part of the seat acceptance fee is adjustable against your institute's tuition fee if you continue with the seat, while a portion is a non-refundable processing charge. If you withdraw before the withdrawal deadline, you get a refund of the acceptance fee minus the processing charge — see our JoSAA refund policy page for details.
4
Do I need to pay the acceptance fee again every round if I get an upgrade?
No. Once you've paid the seat acceptance fee after your first allotment and choose Float or Slide, you don't pay it again for subsequent round upgrades — the fee is a one-time payment for the counselling process, not a per-round charge. You only need to confirm/freeze or respond again as instructed, not repay.
5
What payment modes are accepted for the JoSAA seat acceptance fee?
JoSAA accepts online payment through net banking, debit/credit cards, and UPI via the designated payment gateway on the JoSAA portal. Offline payment modes are generally not supported — keep a backup payment method ready in case your primary one fails close to the deadline.
6
What happens if my fee payment fails due to a technical issue?
If a payment attempt fails due to a bank or gateway error but the amount is debited, it is usually auto-reversed within a few banking days; retry the payment through the portal immediately with a different method if time permits. If the deadline passes due to a genuine technical failure, you can raise it through JoSAA's grievance redressal process, though resolution isn't guaranteed.
