JoSAA 2026 Fees

Registration Fee · Seat Acceptance Fee · Refund Policy · Payment Process

JoSAA 2026 Fee Structure

JoSAA charges two types of fees: (1) a non-refundable registration/processing fee paid at the time of registration, and (2) a seat acceptance fee paid after seat allotment to confirm acceptance.

These two fees serve very different purposes in the counselling process, and understanding the distinction helps avoid confusion during the actual payment steps. The registration fee is a small, one-time charge that every candidate pays simply to enter the JoSAA system and become eligible to fill choices — it is paid once, upfront, regardless of whether you eventually get a seat. It is explicitly non-refundable because it covers the administrative cost of processing your application into the counselling pool, not any specific seat.

The seat acceptance fee, in contrast, is a much larger amount that only becomes payable once you have actually been allotted a seat in some round and choose to accept it (whether via freeze, float, or slide). This fee functions less like a pure counselling charge and more like an advance against your first semester's tuition — most institutes adjust it directly against the fee you would owe anyway when you formally join, which is why it is described as "partially refundable" rather than a sunk cost. Candidates who are allotted a seat but decide not to join at all, particularly after the final withdrawal deadline has passed, generally forfeit this amount.

Why the Seat Acceptance Fee Differs by Category

The seat acceptance fee has historically been set lower for SC, ST and PwD candidates (around ₹15,000 based on the 2025 pattern) compared to General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates (around ₹35,000), reflecting the broader principle of fee relaxation for reserved categories that runs through much of India's higher education admission process. This isn't unique to JoSAA — many central and state-level counselling bodies apply similar category-based fee differentiation, generally in line with government policy on access and affordability for reserved categories.

Because this fee is later adjusted against tuition at the allotted institute, the actual amount you end up paying out of pocket at the time of admission is effectively unchanged by the acceptance fee itself — it's more of a cash-flow timing matter than a genuine additional cost. Where it does matter significantly is in the scenario where a candidate is allotted a seat, pays the acceptance fee, and then decides for any reason not to join — in that case, the amount already paid (rather than a future tuition installment) is what's at stake, which is why understanding the refund conditions below is important before accepting a seat you're not fully certain about.

JoSAA 2026 Refund Policy

Full / Partial Refund Scenarios

  • Seat acceptance fee is adjusted against first-semester tuition at the allotted institute — so effectively it is refunded via offset.
  • If you are upgraded to a better seat, your fee moves to the new allotment automatically.
  • If you withdraw before the last withdrawal deadline, partial refund is given after deducting processing charges.

No Refund Scenarios

  • Registration fee is non-refundable under all circumstances.
  • If you do not join the institute after Round 5 final allotment, the seat acceptance fee is forfeited.
  • If your allotment is cancelled due to document discrepancy or ineligibility, fee refund depends on the reason — usually partial processing charges are deducted.

Budgeting for JoSAA Fees Alongside Other Counselling Costs

Families planning for JoSAA counselling should keep in mind that the seat acceptance fee, while significant, is only one part of the overall cost of the admission process. Additional expenses that commonly come up during physical or online reporting include document verification charges at some institutes, hostel advance payments if applicable, caution money or security deposits, and the cost of preparing certified copies of certificates. None of these are technically JoSAA fees, but they are often due around the same time as the seat acceptance fee, so budgeting for the full reporting process rather than just the JoSAA portal payment avoids last-minute scrambling.

It's also worth noting that candidates participating in both JoSAA and CSAB (the counselling round that follows for candidates not satisfied with or not allotted a JoSAA seat) may end up paying acceptance-type fees more than once across the two processes, depending on how their choices and allotments play out. Keeping track of which fees have been paid where, and understanding the respective refund windows for each process, helps avoid unnecessary financial loss if you're managing seats across more than one counselling system in the same admission cycle.

1
What is the seat acceptance fee for JoSAA 2026?
Based on JoSAA 2025 pattern: ₹35,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates; ₹15,000 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. This fee is adjusted against the first semester tuition fee at the allotted institute. JoSAA 2026 counselling has concluded; verify the exact amounts charged via the archived 2026 schedule on josaa.nic.in.
2
Is the JoSAA 2026 seat acceptance fee refundable?
The seat acceptance fee is partially refundable. If you withdraw before the withdrawal deadline, a portion is refunded (processing charges deducted). If you get an upgraded seat in a later round, the fee moves to the new allotment. If you fail to join after the final round, the fee is generally forfeited.
3
What happens to the seat acceptance fee if I get an upgraded seat in Round 2 or later?
If you had selected 'Float' and get an upgraded seat in Round 2 or later, the already-paid seat acceptance fee is transferred to the new allotment. You do not have to pay again from scratch — only any additional amount due (if fee differs by category or institute) needs to be topped up.
4
Can I pay the JoSAA 2026 fee after the deadline?
No. Fee payment must be completed within the window specified after each round's allotment (typically 48–72 hours). If you miss the fee payment deadline, your seat allotment is automatically cancelled. You will not be considered in subsequent rounds.
5
What payment modes are accepted for JoSAA 2026 fees?
JoSAA accepts online payment through net banking (all major banks), UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM), debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, RuPay), and credit cards. Cash or demand draft is not accepted.
