Freeze, Float and Slide: Which Option to Choose

Freeze is for candidates who are satisfied with the allotted programme and do not want further upgrades. Float keeps you eligible for higher preferences across institutes, while Slide keeps you within the allotted institute for a better branch if available.

Choose the option based on your real preference list and risk tolerance. If you would happily accept a higher choice, Float is usually useful. If the institute matters more than branch, Slide may be better. Freeze only when you are sure you do not want any later-round movement.

What is Freeze in JoSAA 2026?

Freeze means you accept the currently allotted seat and do not want any further upgrades in remaining rounds. Your seat is confirmed. You proceed to pay the full seat acceptance fee and will not participate in subsequent rounds.

What is Float in JoSAA 2026?

Float means you accept the current seat but want to be considered for better seats (higher in your choice list) in subsequent rounds. If a better seat becomes available, you will be automatically upgraded. If not, you keep the current seat.

What is Slide in JoSAA 2026?

Slide is a variant of Float where you want to upgrade only within the same institute — a better programme in the same college. If your preferred branch opens in the same institute, you slide into it. You stay at the same institute regardless.

When should I choose Freeze in JoSAA 2026?

Choose Freeze when you are completely satisfied with the allotted seat and do not want any risk of losing it. Also choose Freeze in the final round (Round 6) as there are no more upgrade rounds.

Can I change from Float to Freeze in JoSAA 2026?

Yes. In each round, you can change your option from Float to Freeze (or vice versa) within the modification window. Once you select Freeze and the round closes, you cannot reverse it in subsequent rounds.
