JoSAA 2026 Has 5 Rounds — Here's What Happens

JoSAA 2026 conducts 5 rounds of seat allotment. Each round re-evaluates all eligible candidates' choice lists against available seats and releases a new allotment result. Candidates must respond (accept/pay/freeze-float-slide) within each round's window to stay in the process.

Round 1 ✅June 13, 2026

Action Required: First allotment released. Fee deadline June 26, 2026.

Round 1 is done. Round 2 allotment was June 30, 2026.

Round 2 ✅June 30, 2026

Many candidates got better seats in Round 2 as Round 1 acceptees froze and released seats.

Action Required: Further upgrades possible. Accept new allotment.

Good round for upgrades — significant movement as candidates freeze or withdraw.

If not upgraded yet, consider whether your Float choices are realistic for your rank.

After Round 5, CSAB special rounds handle remaining vacancies in NITs/IIITs/GFTIs.

Round 2~15,000–20,000 upgradesSignificant movement — many Float candidates upgraded
Round 3~10,000–15,000Continued upgrades, withdrawals create vacancies
Round 4~8,000–10,000Fewer vacancies — mostly marginal upgrades
Round 5 (Final)~5,000–7,000Final round — last upgrade opportunity, fills remaining vacancies

Numbers are approximate based on JoSAA 2025 data. Actual 2026 figures will differ.

Round-by-Round Strategy

Rounds 1–2: Set your choice to Float unless you've already been allotted your dream seat. Most upgrades happen in Round 2 as Round 1 Freeze candidates vacate seats when others exit.

Rounds 3–4: Evaluate whether your Float choices are still realistically achievable. If the gap between your rank and your aspirational choices is too large, update choices or plan to Freeze at your current allotment.

Round 5 (Final): This is your last meaningful upgrade opportunity — decide whether to Freeze at your current seat or stay on Float for one last chance. After results, all seats are locked automatically. Begin institute reporting process immediately after results. Physical reporting windows are tight (2–5 days).

1
How many rounds does JoSAA 2026 have?
JoSAA 2026 has 5 rounds of seat allotment (Round 1 through Round 5). Each round processes choice lists of eligible candidates and allocates seats based on rank, quota, and available vacancies. Round 5 (July 16) is the final round after which JoSAA counselling closes.
2
Do I need to re-register or re-fill choices for each JoSAA 2026 round?
No. You register and fill choices only once at the beginning. The same choice list (in the order you submitted it) is used for all 5 rounds. You only need to log in after each round to accept/confirm your allotment, pay fee, and select Freeze/Float/Slide.
3
In which round do most candidates get seats in JoSAA?
Most candidates get their first allotment in Round 1 or Round 2. Higher-ranked candidates tend to get allotted in Round 1. Candidates who don't get allotted in Round 1 often receive seats in Rounds 2–4 as other candidates upgrade or withdraw. Round 5 is the final round and typically has fewer vacancies.
4
What happens after JoSAA 2026 Round 5 (final)?
After Round 5, JoSAA closes. Any seats still vacant (due to withdrawals or candidates not reporting) go to CSAB for special rounds. CSAB conducts 2–3 special rounds to fill remaining NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats. IIT vacant seats are generally not offered after JoSAA closes.
5
Can I withdraw after Round 1 and still participate in Round 2?
No. If you formally withdraw from JoSAA at any point, you exit all remaining rounds. However, if you simply don't accept/pay for a Round 1 allotment (i.e., your allotment lapses), you are also removed from further consideration. To stay in the system, you must accept and pay after each round's allotment.
