Round 5: The Second-to-Last Chance

By Round 5, most JoSAA candidates have settled into their final seats. The number of floating candidates and available upgrades is at its lowest. Round 5 is meaningful for candidates who are very close to their aspirational choice ranks.

Key Decision Point After Round 5:

After Round 5, Round 5 is the final round — there is no Round 6. If you're on Float and no upgrade came in Round 5, carefully assess: is your aspirational choice realistically achievable in Round 5? If not, Freeze to lock in your current seat.

Is Round 5 the last chance for an upgrade?

Round 5 is the second-to-last round — Round 5 is the final. Both Rounds 5 and 6 offer upgrades for Float candidates. However, the upgrade pool is smallest in these rounds. If you haven't been upgraded to your aspirational choices by Round 5, the gap between your rank and those choices is likely too large.

Should I Float in Round 5 if I haven't been upgraded yet?

Yes, if there are realistic choices (1–2 ranks above your current allotment) still above your current seat in your choice list. But if your top remaining choices are far above your rank, consider Freezing and accepting your current seat to avoid the risk of last-minute complications.

What should I do after Round 5 (final) allotment?

Start physical preparation for institute reporting: collect original documents, arrange for travel and accommodation near the allotted institute, and check the institute's reporting schedule. Also register for CSAB as a backup if you're still uncertain.
