Round 4: Declared July 10, 2026 — Second-to-Last Round

JoSAA 2026 Round 4 Seat Allotment

Round 4 allotment was declared on July 10, 2026 — the second-to-last of JoSAA's five rounds. Only Round 5 (final, July 16, 2026) followed. This page covers what Round 4 involved, the IIT withdrawal deadline that fell right after it, and how candidates were expected to prepare for the final round.

Round 4 = The Final Stretch

Round 4 was the point where JoSAA 2026 entered its closing phase. With only one round left, the IIT/IISc withdrawal deadline (July 14) and the final Round 5 result (July 16) both followed in quick succession. See our Round 5 final result guide for what came next.

What Made Round 4 Different From Earlier Rounds

Round 4 was mechanically identical to every other JoSAA round — Float and Slide candidates from Round 3 were re-processed against newly vacant seats, and unallotted candidates were re-evaluated too. What made it distinct was its position in the calendar: with Round 5 as the hard final round, Round 4 was effectively the last "normal" round where a Float decision carried genuine long-term upside without the pressure of it being the absolute last chance.

Seat movement volume in Round 4 was noticeably smaller than in Round 2 or even Round 3. By this stage, a large share of candidates satisfied with a top-30 NIT or established IIT branch had already Frozen. The candidates still actively Floating into Round 4 tended to be concentrated at two extremes: very high-rank candidates chasing a specific IIT branch (say, moving from IIT Guwahati to IIT Kanpur CSE) and moderate-to-lower-rank candidates still hoping to move from a GFTI or newer IIIT into an established NIT.

This round also carried an important category-specific dynamic. Home-state quota seats at NITs — which reserve a fixed proportion for candidates domiciled in the NIT's home state — often showed their final closing-rank adjustments in Round 4 rather than Round 3, because Other-State (OS) quota candidates exiting the process freed up cascading vacancies that took a round longer to reach Home-State seekers in the merit order. EWS and OBC-NCL candidates in particular saw meaningful last-minute movement in Round 4 for exactly this reason.

The IIT/IISc withdrawal deadline of July 14, 2026 sat just four days after the Round 4 result — a genuinely tight window. This deadline is unique to IIT/IISc seats: candidates allotted an IIT or IISc seat who wished to withdraw with the standard refund rules had to act before July 14, since after Round 5 those seats become effectively locked in place with no further withdrawal option under the same terms. This is a materially different rule from NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats, which follow their own separate, later withdrawal and reporting schedule — see our dedicated withdrawal after Round 5 guide for the full breakdown.

A common error at the Round 4 stage was candidates delaying their withdrawal decision because they assumed Round 5 would bring a large upgrade — historically, Round 5 (the final round) brings the smallest movement of the entire process, since almost all remaining Float candidates by that point are chasing very specific, hard-to-get seats. Treating Round 4 as effectively "your last real shot" was the more accurate mental model.

What to Do After the Round 4 Result

1

Check your allotment and compare to Round 3

Log in to josaa.nic.in, view your Round 4 allotment, and note whether it changed from Round 3. Check institute, branch, category, and seat type carefully.

2

Decide Freeze vs Float with Round 5 in mind

Since Round 5 was the final round with typically the smallest movement, this was the moment to realistically assess whether staying on Float was worth the uncertainty versus Freezing a good Round 4 seat.

3

Pay the fee by July 13, 2026

The Round 4 response and fee payment deadline was July 13. Missing it meant automatic cancellation — a serious risk this late in the process, with only one round left to recover.

4

IIT/IISc allottees: decide on withdrawal by July 14

If allotted an IIT/IISc seat and seriously considering withdrawal (e.g., to pursue a confirmed alternative), July 14, 2026 was the deadline to do so under standard refund rules.

5

Prepare for Round 5 and physical reporting

Candidates staying on Float needed to be ready to check the Round 5 result on July 16 and, immediately after, begin preparing documents for physical/online reporting at the allotted institute.

Round-by-Round Movement Pattern (Typical, Illustrative)

This is a general pattern seen across recent JoSAA cycles, not official 2026 seat-movement data. Use it to calibrate expectations, not as a guarantee.

RoundRelative MovementTypical Driver
Round 2HighestFirst full cascade of Round 1 Float upgrades and Freeze exits
Round 3High–ModerateContinued cascade, more first-time allotments
Round 4 (this round)Moderate–LowNiche movement in GFTIs, IIITs, home-state NIT quota
Round 5 (Final)LowestOnly the most stubborn Float candidates remain

Round 4 Strategy Checklist

  • Treat Round 4 as your last "real" decision round. Round 5's movement is typically the smallest of all five rounds.
  • Don't miss the July 13 fee deadline — with only one round left, a cancelled allotment here is very costly to recover from.
  • IIT/IISc candidates needed to finalize withdrawal thinking by July 14 — this deadline does not repeat after Round 5.
  • If still unallotted after Round 4, this was the moment to also start researching CSAB 2026 as a parallel backup plan — registration ran July 28 to Aug 3, the SR1 result was declared Aug 6, and the SR2 result was declared Aug 12 — CSAB 2026 counselling is now complete.

JoSAA 2026 Round 4 – FAQs

Common questions about JoSAA 2026 Round 4 seat allotment, deadlines, and the final round

1
When was JoSAA 2026 Round 4 allotment result declared?
JoSAA 2026 Round 4 seat allotment result was declared on July 10, 2026, four days after Round 3 (July 6). This was the second-to-last round of JoSAA 2026 — only Round 5, the final round, remained after it, and that was declared July 16, 2026.
2
Why was the IIT/IISc withdrawal deadline important right after Round 4?
For candidates allotted an IIT or IISc seat, JoSAA sets a specific withdrawal deadline (July 14, 2026 for 2026) before the final round. This is the last date IIT/IISc allottees can withdraw from JoSAA with the applicable refund rules — after Round 5, IIT/IISc seats become non-withdrawable in the same way. NIT/IIIT/GFTI candidates have a separate, later withdrawal timeline that extends beyond Round 5.
3
Was Round 4 movement smaller than Round 3?
Generally yes. By Round 4, the pool of active Float candidates had thinned considerably compared to Round 2 or Round 3, since many candidates had already Frozen a satisfactory seat. Round 4 movement tends to concentrate in specific pockets — GFTIs, newer IIITs, and NIT branches with historically volatile closing ranks — rather than being broad-based across all institutes.
4
If I got no seat through Round 3, what happened in Round 4?
Unallotted candidates were automatically evaluated again in Round 4 against all vacancies created by upgrades, cancellations, and non-payment dropouts from Round 3. With only Round 5 left after Round 4, this was a critical juncture — candidates in this position needed to review whether their choice list needed broadening.
5
Should I have Frozen in Round 4 or waited for Round 5?
Because Round 5 was final and Freeze-only in effect (no further choice-based upgrade beyond it in JoSAA), Round 4 was the last round where a genuine Float-vs-Freeze strategic decision applied. Candidates satisfied with their Round 4 seat could reasonably Freeze; those still hoping for a meaningfully better option could Float into Round 5, understanding it was their last JoSAA opportunity.
6
What fee deadline applied after Round 4?
The Round 4 fee payment deadline was July 13, 2026, three days after the result. Candidates who received a fresh allotment or upgrade in Round 4 needed to complete payment (₹35,000 Gen/OBC/EWS or ₹15,000 SC/ST/PwD, if not already paid) and submit their Freeze/Float/Slide choice within this window to remain eligible for Round 5.
7
Is Round 4 the last round to change your choice list?
No — JoSAA choice lists are locked once for the entire counselling process during the original choice-filling window (closed June 11, 2026). Round 4, like every round after Round 1, only re-runs the matching algorithm against your already-locked list; it does not allow you to add or reorder choices. This is why building a broad, well-ordered list before the June 11 deadline mattered far more than any single round's outcome.
