JoSAA 2026 NIT Vacant Seats After Round 5

JoSAA 2026's final round (Round 5) was declared July 16, 2026. Unlike IIT seats, NIT seats that remain vacant after this round don't just sit unfilled — they flow directly into CSAB's special round pool. Here's exactly what that means and how to act on it.

Why NIT Vacant Seats Are Different From IIT Vacant Seats

This is the single most important distinction for anyone tracking post-Round-5 vacancies. IITs do not participate in CSAB at all — any IIT seat left vacant after JoSAA's Round 5 is handled (or left unfilled) entirely at the discretion of the individual IIT, with no centralized reapplication route. NIT seats work completely differently: NITs, along with IIITs and GFTIs, are exactly the institutes CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) exists to serve.

Once JoSAA's Round 5 concludes and the NIT+ withdrawal window (July 16–20, 2026) closes, JoSAA's vacancy data for NIT seats is compiled and handed over as the base seat matrix for CSAB's special rounds. This means a vacant NIT seat is not a dead end — it is, in a very real sense, the exact seat that CSAB's Special Round 1 and Special Round 2 exist to fill.

Practically, this changes the calculus for candidates. If your target was an IIT and you didn't get a seat, your realistic next moves are largely outside the JoSAA/CSAB ecosystem. If your target was an NIT, CSAB (registration ran July 28–August 3, with SR1/SR2 concluding by August 12, 2026) was the direct next step — see our full JoSAA vs CSAB SR1 combined timeline for how that played out.

Old NITs vs New NITs: Vacancy Variance

Vacant NIT seats after Round 5 are not evenly spread across all 31 NITs. The older, well-established NITs — NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, NIT Rourkela, NIT Allahabad (MNNIT), NIT Bhopal (MANIT), NIT Nagpur (VNIT), NIT Kurukshetra, and NIT Durgapur among them — typically show very few, if any, vacant seats by Round 5, especially in core branches like CSE and Electronics. Decades of placement records and brand recognition mean applicant demand for these institutes consistently exceeds seat supply.

Newer NITs — including NIT Andhra Pradesh, NIT Delhi, NIT Goa, NIT Manipur, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Mizoram, NIT Nagaland, NIT Puducherry, NIT Sikkim, NIT Uttarakhand, and NIT Arunachal Pradesh — typically carry a disproportionately higher share of the total vacant NIT seat count. This isn't a reflection of poor academic quality; it largely reflects that these institutes are still building the applicant awareness and placement track record that older NITs accumulated over 60+ years.

For CSAB special round planning, this variance matters directly: candidates with ranks that wouldn't have secured a seat at an older NIT through JoSAA may find realistic, genuine opportunities at newer NITs through CSAB SR1 or SR2 — often in the exact branch they wanted, just at a different institute than their first choice.

How to Track and Act on NIT Vacant Seats

1

Check JoSAA's post-Round-5 vacancy report

Published on josaa.nic.in shortly after the July 16, 2026 result, typically broken down by institute, program, category, and seat type.

2

Withdraw during the NIT+ window, if applicable

If you already hold and froze a JoSAA NIT seat and want to try CSAB instead, you must formally withdraw during the NIT+ withdrawal window (July 16–20, 2026) — this is a one-way decision.

3

Register for CSAB

CSAB registration ran from July 28 to August 3, 2026 on csab.nic.in, with SR1/SR2 concluding by August 12, 2026. This was a separate registration from JoSAA — JoSAA choices did not carry over.

4

Fill a broad, realistic CSAB choice list

Since CSAB's NIT seat pool is drawn specifically from post-Round-5 vacancies, include a wider spread of newer NITs and branches rather than only the same institutes you targeted in JoSAA.

Strategy Tips for NIT Aspirants Post-Round 5

  • Don't confuse NIT vacancies with IIT vacancies. Only NIT (and IIIT/GFTI) vacant seats flow into CSAB — plan your next move accordingly.
  • Newer NITs are where most CSAB movement happens. Be open to institutes you may not have prioritized in your JoSAA choice list.
  • Only withdraw your existing JoSAA NIT seat if your realistic CSAB options are meaningfully better — this decision cannot be reversed.
  • Use a college predictor before finalizing your CSAB choice list to sanity-check which NIT/branch combinations are realistic for your rank.

JoSAA 2026 NIT Vacant Seats After Round 5 – FAQs

Common questions about NIT vacant seats after JoSAA's final round and how they feed into CSAB

1
Do NIT vacant seats after JoSAA Round 5 automatically go to CSAB?
Yes. Unlike IIT seats, NIT vacant seats compiled after JoSAA 2026's Round 5 (July 16, 2026) form a core part of CSAB's special round seat matrix. CSAB registration ran from July 28 to August 3, 2026, and CSAB SR1/SR2 concluded by August 12, 2026 — these NIT vacancies, alongside IIIT and GFTI vacancies, are exactly what candidates compete for in Special Round 1 (SR1) and Special Round 2 (SR2).
2
Which NITs typically show more vacant seats — old or new NITs?
Newer NITs (such as NIT Andhra Pradesh, NIT Manipur, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Mizoram, NIT Nagaland, NIT Puducherry, NIT Sikkim, NIT Uttarakhand, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Delhi and NIT Goa) tend to show more vacant seats after Round 5 than the older, well-established NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Rourkela, Allahabad, Bhopal, Nagpur, Kurukshetra, Durgapur, and similar). This isn't a strict rule every year, but it reflects a consistent demand gradient — older NITs have decades of placement track record and brand recognition that newer NITs are still building.
3
Are vacant NIT seats concentrated in specific branches?
Generally yes. Core CSE, Electronics, and Electrical branches at almost every NIT (old or new) fill up well before Round 5. Vacancies concentrate more in Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Textile, and other traditional branches, along with reserved-category and PwD seats where the rank-eligible applicant pool is thinner. Newer, interdisciplinary programs at some NITs also show higher vacancy rates simply due to lower awareness among applicants.
4
Can I get a better NIT branch through CSAB than what I had in JoSAA?
It's possible but should be approached cautiously. CSAB's seat pool (from NIT/IIIT/GFTI vacancies) is narrower than JoSAA's, and closing ranks for CSAB special rounds can occasionally close tighter than JoSAA's Round 5 for popular branches at old NITs, since only the 'leftover' seats are on offer. Use the JoSAA Round 5 result as your baseline and only pursue CSAB if you're either unallotted or your current seat is one you're genuinely willing to give up.
5
Where can I check the exact number of vacant NIT seats after Round 5?
JoSAA typically publishes an institute-wise and category-wise vacancy report on josaa.nic.in shortly after Round 5 concludes. CSAB then republishes (and sometimes revises slightly) this same NIT vacancy data as part of its seat matrix on csab.nic.in — CSAB registration ran from July 28 to August 3, 2026, and CSAB SR1/SR2 concluded by August 12, 2026. Always treat the CSAB-published matrix as the authoritative figure for special round planning, since it reflects the most current, post-withdrawal-window numbers.
6
Do I need to withdraw from my JoSAA NIT seat to try for a different NIT seat via CSAB?
Yes. If you already hold and froze a JoSAA-allotted NIT seat, you must formally withdraw during the NIT+ withdrawal window (July 16–20, 2026) to become CSAB-eligible. This forfeits your current seat entirely — there's no way to reclaim it if CSAB doesn't work out — so only withdraw if your realistic CSAB options are meaningfully better than what you already have.
7
Do GFTIs and IIITs also contribute vacant seats the same way as NITs?
Yes, structurally all three categories — NITs, IIITs (the centrally-funded ones participating in JoSAA), and GFTIs — pool their post-Round-5 vacancies into the same CSAB special round matrix. GFTIs typically contribute the highest proportion of vacant seats relative to their total intake, since they generally see lower applicant demand than NITs and IIITs even across 5 full JoSAA rounds.
