Why SR1 Exists and How Its Timeline Is Built

CSAB Special Round 1 (SR1) is the first of two special rounds the Central Seat Allocation Board runs after JoSAA's five rounds are fully reconciled. Its schedule wasn't arbitrary — it was deliberately sequenced after JoSAA Round 5 (July 16, 2026), the NIT+ withdrawal window (July 16–20) during which candidates gave up a JoSAA seat to become CSAB-eligible, and the Partial Admission Fee/category-restoration window (July 22–24). Only once that reconciliation was complete did CSAB know the true vacant-seat count, which is why registration opened on July 28 and ran through August 3 (now closed).

Unlike JoSAA, where each of the 5 rounds has its own separate choice-fill period, CSAB SR1 and SR2 share a single registration and choice list. Candidates registered once (July 28–August 3), locked one preference list (by August 5, 2:00 PM), and that same list was used for both the SR1 allotment (declared August 6) and the SR2 allotment (declared August 12). This is a common point of confusion for candidates coming from the JoSAA process, where re-filing choices every round is the norm.

Registration, choice locking, and both special rounds for this cycle are now fully complete — there is no further action needed. SR1 result was declared August 6, and SR2 result was declared August 12, 2026, with reporting through August 17, marking the end of CSAB 2026 counselling with no SR3.

Category-wise, the timeline itself is identical for General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD candidates — there is no separate registration window by category. Where category matters is in eligibility verification (certificate upload during registration) and in the seat-acceptance fee amount, not in the dates themselves. PwD candidates should keep certificates ready in advance since document verification can occasionally extend processing time near the choice-locking deadline.

Institute-tier also has no bearing on the SR1 timeline — old NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, etc.), newer NITs (Delhi, Goa, Manipur, etc.), the IIITs under the PPP model, and GFTIs all allot on the same SR1 date. What differs is seat availability: older, high-demand NITs typically show far fewer vacant seats in SR1 than newer NITs, most IIITs, or GFTIs, where vacancy counts can be substantial. See our NIT vacant seats breakdown for institute-level detail.

Finally, remember that SR1 is not the last chance — CSAB SR2 follows roughly a week later, using the same locked choice list. If you're not allotted in SR1, or you float for an upgrade, you remain automatically in contention for SR2 without re-registering. See the SR1 vs SR2 comparison for exactly what changes between the two rounds.

How the SR1 Window Played Out

1

Registration closed Aug 3, 10 AM

Candidates used JEE Main 2026 credentials to register and pay the registration/SREF fee before the August 3, 2026, 10:00 AM deadline. This window is now closed.

2

Mock allotment reviewed (July 31)

The mock allotment let candidates gauge where their rank stood relative to likely SR1 cutoffs before finalizing their choice list.

3

Choices locked (Aug 5, 2 PM)

Institute-branch combinations were locked in order of genuine preference — this single list fed both SR1 and SR2. No edits are possible after the deadline.

4

SR1 result declared (Aug 6)

The SR1 result is out — log in to csab.nic.in to check your status and download your allotment letter with institute, branch, category, and fee details.

5

Accept seat and pay fee (Aug 6–11)

If allotted, pay the seat acceptance fee and complete online reporting within the SR1 window to avoid forfeiting the seat to the next candidate.

SR1 Timeline Tips

  • Registration and choice locking are complete — both windows (through Aug 3 and Aug 5 respectively) have closed for this cycle.
  • Check your SR1 result now if you haven't already — it was declared August 6. Use our CSAB College Predictor to gauge your SR2 chances if not allotted.
  • Pay the SR1 fee immediately if allotted — the reporting window runs through August 11; last-day payment failures are a common reason candidates lose seats.
  • Not allotted in SR1? You automatically remain in the pool for SR2 — no re-registration needed.

CSAB 2026 SR1 Dates – FAQs

Common questions about the CSAB 2026 Special Round 1 schedule

1
What was the CSAB 2026 Special Round 1 (SR1) schedule?
CSAB 2026 registration and vacancy display opened July 28, 2026 and closed August 3 at 10:00 AM. Mock allotment was released July 31. Choice locking closed August 5 at 2:00 PM, after which the SR1 allotment result was declared on August 6, 2026. Seat acceptance and online reporting for SR1 then ran from August 6 to 11, 2026, per the schedule published on csab.nic.in.
2
Was CSAB SR1 registration the same as JoSAA registration?
No. CSAB reused your JEE Main 2026 Application Number and password as login credentials, but registration itself was a separate step on csab.nic.in during the July 28–August 3 window (now closed). Your JoSAA choice list, fee payment, and freeze/float/slide status did not carry over — candidates filled and locked an entirely new choice list on the CSAB portal before 2:00 PM on August 5, 2026.
3
What happened if a candidate missed the CSAB SR1 choice locking deadline on August 5?
There was no late-locking provision after 2:00 PM on August 5, 2026. Candidates whose choices weren't locked by then were excluded from the SR1 allotment entirely, with no way to rejoin in SR2. This deadline has now passed — the SR1 result was declared August 6, 2026, and SR2 (using the same locked list) was declared August 12, 2026, completing CSAB 2026 counselling.
4
When should I pay the SR1 seat acceptance fee?
If you're allotted a seat in SR1, pay the seat acceptance fee (₹30,000 for General/EWS/OBC-NCL, ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD, per the CSAB fee structure) and complete online reporting within the SR1 window of August 6–11, 2026. Pay as soon as the result is out rather than on August 10 or 11 — payment gateway failures near the deadline are one of the most common reasons candidates lose an otherwise-confirmed seat.
5
Does SR1 include NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, or only some institutes?
SR1 covers vacant seats across all CSAB-participating institutes — the 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and roughly 40+ GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes), which together made up around 114 institutes in the 2026 cycle. The seat pool comes from JoSAA leftovers after all 5 rounds plus fresh vacancies created by candidates who withdrew a JoSAA seat specifically to try CSAB.
6
Are these SR1 dates confirmed?
Yes — the dates in this schedule (registration July 28–August 3, choice locking August 5 at 2 PM, SR1 result declared August 6, reporting August 6–11) are confirmed per the CSAB 2026 schedule published on csab.nic.in. SR1 and SR2 have both concluded — SR2 result was declared August 12, 2026 with reporting through August 17, completing CSAB 2026 counselling.
7
Could candidates who never registered for JoSAA apply for SR1?
Yes. CSAB SR1 eligibility did not require prior JoSAA participation — any JEE Main 2026 qualified candidate meeting the Class 12 criteria (75% aggregate, or 65% for SC/ST, or top 20 percentile) could register directly on csab.nic.in during the July 28–August 3 window, which is now closed. Registration for this cycle is no longer open.
