Always cross-check your individual status on the official portal.

Why SR2 Doesn't Need a New Registration

CSAB structured SR1 and SR2 as a single continuous allotment cycle built on one registration and one locked choice list, unlike JoSAA where every round has its own choice-fill window. This design exists because CSAB only has two special rounds to work with — compressing registration into two separate cycles would leave too little time for physical reporting and document verification before the academic session begins. The same ranked list, locked by August 5, 2:00 PM, fed both the SR1 algorithm run (August 6) and the SR2 algorithm run (August 12).

A frequent misunderstanding among candidates coming from JoSAA is expecting an "edit choices" option to reappear before SR2 — it doesn't. If you want to modify your preferences between SR1 and SR2, there is generally no provision to do so; your list is locked for the entire CSAB cycle from August 5 onward. This makes the initial choice-locking decision far more consequential in CSAB than any single JoSAA round, since you're committing to one order across two allotment attempts.

Category-wise, SR2 dates apply uniformly to General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD candidates — there's no separate SR2 sub-window by category. What differs by category is typically the closing-rank movement between SR1 and SR2: reserved-category seats at under-subscribed GFTIs and newer IIITs often see more rank movement between the two rounds than General category seats at established NITs, since the reserved pools are proportionally smaller and more sensitive to individual withdrawals.

Institute-tier dynamics also matter here. Older NITs with consistently high demand (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Rourkela) rarely show large SR1-to-SR2 seat count increases, while newer NITs, most IIITs, and especially GFTIs typically see their available seat count grow measurably from SR1 to SR2 as SR1-allotted candidates elsewhere decline or don't report. If your SR1 result was disappointing, it's worth checking our GFTI vacant seats analysis to see where SR2 movement is likely to be largest.

SR2 was the last centralized opportunity in the CSAB cycle. With the August 17 reporting deadline and August 13–18 physical reporting window now closed, CSAB's portal-based process for 2026 is complete; any further seat filling happens, if at all, through individual institute-level spot rounds that are not coordinated through csab.nic.in.

SR2 Timeline Tips

  • Don't wait for a "confirmation" email to check your SR2 status — log in to csab.nic.in directly to view your final status rather than relying on notifications.
  • Pay the SR2 fee immediately after result declaration — the August 12–17 window is your last centralized chance to secure a CSAB seat.
  • Keep original documents ready in advance for physical reporting, since SR1 and SR2 reporting windows overlap closely (both fall around Aug 13–18).

CSAB 2026 SR2 Dates – FAQs

Common questions about the CSAB 2026 Special Round 2 schedule

1
What is the CSAB 2026 SR2 date schedule?
CSAB Special Round 2 (SR2) result was declared August 12, 2026, with seat acceptance and online reporting running from August 12 to 17, immediately following the SR1 window of August 6–11. There was no separate registration or choice-locking step for SR2 — it used the same choice list locked on August 5, 2:00 PM for SR1. With SR2 reporting complete, CSAB 2026 counselling is now finished, per the schedule published on csab.nic.in.
2
Do I need to register again for CSAB SR2?
No. CSAB SR1 and SR2 share a single registration (July 28–August 3, now closed) and one locked choice list (locked by August 5, 2 PM). If you registered and locked choices for SR1, you are automatically considered for SR2 as well — there is no separate SR2 registration form or fresh choice-filling window on csab.nic.in.
3
Who is eligible to participate in CSAB SR2 2026?
Any candidate who registered for CSAB by August 3 and locked a choice list by August 5 is eligible for SR2, provided they did not freeze a seat in SR1 (freezing exits you from further rounds). Candidates who were 'not allotted' in SR1, or who chose to 'float' after an SR1 allotment, both remain automatically in contention for SR2 without any extra action.
4
Is the SR2 seat pool different from SR1?
Yes. The SR2 seat pool is smaller than SR1's opening pool because seats accepted and frozen by SR1 candidates are removed, but it can also gain seats from candidates who were allotted in SR1 and didn't report or pay the fee within the August 6–11 window, releasing those seats back. Net vacancy trends vary by institute — see our NIT vacant seats analysis for how this typically plays out at the institute-tier level.
5
What happens if I miss the SR2 reporting window (Aug 12–17)?
If you're allotted a seat in SR2 but fail to pay the seat acceptance fee and complete online reporting by August 17, 2026, you forfeit that seat and your CSAB participation for the cycle typically ends, since SR2 is generally the last centralized CSAB round. Some institutes may run their own institute-level spot rounds afterward to fill residual vacancies, but these are separate from the CSAB portal process.
6
Is CSAB SR2 the last round of CSAB 2026?
Yes, SR2 is the final centralized round conducted through the CSAB portal (csab.nic.in) for the 2026 cycle. After SR2 closes on August 17, any further seat filling — if it happens at all — is typically handled directly by individual institutes through their own spot admission or vacant-seat rounds, which fall outside CSAB's centralized process. Check our SR1 vs SR2 comparison for a full breakdown of what changes between the two.
