JoSAA 2026 EWS Cutoff Trends Within IIITs

How the 10% EWS reservation plays out specifically within IIIT seat pools, and how EWS cutoffs compare to General within IIITs.

EWS Reservation Within the IIIT Seat Structure

EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation was introduced as a 10% vertical reservation for candidates from the General category who meet specific income and asset criteria, and it applies uniformly across all JoSAA-participating institutes, including the 26 IIITs. However, just as with OBC-NCL, the way this reservation plays out in practice looks quite different at IIITs compared to NITs, because of how small and CS-concentrated the IIIT seat matrix is.

Small Seat Pools Amplify Year-to-Year Movement

Applying 10% EWS reservation to a typical IIIT CSE programme with around 60 seats yields roughly 6 EWS seats. Compare this to a large NIT branch with 120+ seats, where 10% EWS reservation yields 12 or more seats — nearly double the pool size, which naturally smooths out fluctuations. With only a handful of EWS seats available per IIIT programme, the entry of even a few additional strong EWS-eligible candidates in a given year can shift the closing rank meaningfully, which is why IIIT EWS cutoffs should always be read as an indicative range rather than a fixed number.

Why EWS Cutoffs Sit Closer to General Than Other Categories

Unlike OBC-NCL, SC, or ST reservation — which draw from distinct social categories with their own separate rank lists and historically wider rank gaps versus General — EWS candidates are drawn from within the otherwise-General applicant pool, differentiated purely by an income and asset threshold rather than category identity. This means the underlying academic competitiveness of the EWS applicant pool closely mirrors the General pool applying to the same institute and programme, which is why EWS closing ranks at IIITs (and across JoSAA generally) tend to track reasonably close to General cutoffs, rather than showing the very large gap seen with OBC-NCL/SC/ST.

Income and Asset Certificate Requirements

  • Annual family income must be below Rs 8 lakh (from all sources, for the specified financial year).
  • Family should not own more than 5 acres of agricultural land.
  • Residential flat below 1,000 sq. ft., or residential plot below specified municipal/non-municipal area limits.
  • Certificate must be issued by a competent authority in the prescribed central government format, and must be current/valid for the applicable financial year at the time of document verification.

An EWS certificate that does not conform to the exact prescribed format, or one that has expired by the time of document verification, will be rejected — meaning the candidate is then evaluated purely under General category rank, losing the benefit of the reserved seat even if their EWS status is otherwise genuine. Given how tight the EWS seat pool is at most IIITs, candidates should prepare this certificate well ahead of counselling rather than scrambling during the document verification window.

Flagship vs PPP IIITs for EWS Candidates

At flagship, high-demand IIITs (IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi, and the older centrally funded IIITs like IIIT Allahabad), EWS cutoffs remain tight given intense overall demand for these institutes' CS-focused programmes. At many of the newer PPP-mode IIITs, EWS cutoffs are noticeably more relaxed, offering EWS candidates a realistic path into a dedicated tech-focused institute even at more moderate rank levels. As always, candidates should check the specific institute and branch closing rank trend across the last few rounds of the previous cycle rather than relying on a single headline number, since IIIT cutoffs can move considerably between Round 1 and the final round.

Frequently Asked Questions – EWS Cutoff in IIITs

Common queries about EWS category cutoff trends within IIITs

1
How does the 10% EWS reservation apply within an IIIT's seat matrix?
10% of seats in every eligible programme at every IIIT are reserved for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates from the General category who meet the income and asset criteria. Because IIITs run smaller total intakes than NITs, 10% of a 60-seat CSE programme works out to around 6 EWS seats — a small pool that makes EWS cutoffs highly sensitive to how many strong EWS-eligible candidates apply in a given year.
2
How close are EWS cutoffs to General cutoffs within IIITs?
EWS cutoffs typically sit reasonably close to General category cutoffs, often within a moderate percentage gap rather than the very wide gap seen between General and OBC-NCL/SC/ST cutoffs. This is because EWS candidates come from within the otherwise-unreserved General pool (minus income/asset criteria), so the academic competitiveness of applicants is broadly similar to the General category cohort applying to the same IIIT.
3
What is the income and asset certificate requirement for EWS at IIITs through JoSAA?
EWS candidates must submit an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed central government format, confirming annual family income below Rs 8 lakh and compliance with specified asset limits (including limits on agricultural land, residential property, and other assets). This certificate must be valid for the specified financial year and is verified during JoSAA document verification — an invalid or expired certificate results in loss of the EWS-reserved seat.
4
Do flagship IIITs like IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Delhi have very tight EWS cutoffs?
Yes. Because these institutes are extremely popular for CSE, their EWS cutoffs are correspondingly tight, generally not far behind the General category cutoff for the same programme. Candidates hoping to use the EWS reservation at these flagship IIITs should still expect strong competition, unlike some newer PPP IIITs where EWS cutoffs may be noticeably more relaxed relative to General.
5
Can an EWS candidate also be considered under General category seats in the same IIIT programme?
Yes. If your rank is strong enough to also qualify under the General (Open) category rank list for a programme, you remain eligible to be allotted a General seat as well, in addition to being considered for EWS-reserved seats. JoSAA's algorithm automatically considers you for the best available option across both pools based on your choice order and rank.
