JoSAA 2026 General/OPEN Category Cutoff – All Institutes

Opening and closing ranks for General/OPEN category seats at IITs, NITs & IIITs — based on JoSAA 2025 actual allotment data.

General/OPEN Category in JoSAA 2026 — Key Facts

General or OPEN category seats are the most competitive seats in JoSAA. Approximately 50.5% of total seats fall in the unreserved OPEN category. The cutoffs are based on JEE Advanced CRL ranks for IITs and JEE Main CRL ranks for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs. Candidates who secure a General OPEN seat typically have no category benefit — they compete on pure merit.

Note that SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and EWS candidates who clear the General cutoff are allotted General category seats, freeing up reserved seats for others. The General category cutoff represents the floor rank at which the last seat was filled in Round 6 of JoSAA 2025.

JoSAA 2026 General Category Cutoff – FAQs

Common questions about OPEN/General category cutoffs in JoSAA 2026

1
What is General/OPEN category in JoSAA 2026?
General or OPEN category refers to unreserved seats open to all candidates regardless of caste or religion. These seats constitute approximately 50.5% of total seats (after EWS at 10%, OBC at 27%, SC at 15%, ST at 7.5%). The General category uses the Common Rank List (CRL) from JEE Main or JEE Advanced. Candidates from any category (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) with a good enough rank can secure a General category seat.
2
What JEE Advanced rank is needed for IIT Bombay CSE General category?
IIT Bombay CSE is the most coveted program in India. Based on JoSAA 2025, the General-OPEN closing rank for IIT Bombay CSE was approximately 64–68 (JEE Advanced CRL). IIT Delhi CSE closed at approximately 114–118. These are extremely competitive — typically top 100–150 JEE Advanced rank holders. The opening rank (first allotment) is even lower, often in the top 50.
3
What JEE Main rank is needed for NIT Trichy CSE General category?
NIT Trichy CSE is the most competitive NIT program. Based on JoSAA 2025 Round 6, the Other State General-OPEN closing rank for NIT Trichy CSE was approximately 6,000–8,000 JEE Main CRL. The Home State (Tamil Nadu) General closing rank was typically 4,000–6,000. For 2026, expect similar ranges. A JEE Main rank under 8,000 gives a strong chance at NIT Trichy CSE through Other State quota.
4
Will General category cutoffs go up or down in JoSAA 2026?
General category cutoffs for JoSAA 2026 are expected to be close to 2025 levels. For IITs, the number of JEE Advanced qualifiers is relatively stable (~17,000 per year). For NITs, the JEE Main 2026 result and total qualified candidates affect cutoffs. Minor seat additions to popular branches could ease cutoffs slightly, while any reduction in qualified pool could tighten them. Overall, expect 2026 cutoffs within ±5-10% of 2025 figures.
5
What is the last rank for any IIT General category in JoSAA 2026?
The last (highest) General-OPEN rank admitted to any IIT program in JoSAA 2025 was approximately 15,000–16,000 (JEE Advanced CRL) for less popular branches at newer IITs. Programs like Mining Engineering, Textile Technology, or non-CSE branches at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad or IIT Jodhpur had the highest closing ranks. If you have a JEE Advanced rank under 16,000, you should be able to secure some IIT seat.
