Why JEE Advanced Marking is Unique

JEE Advanced marking is significantly more complex than JEE Main. The multiple correct question type is the most distinctive — and most feared — aspect. These questions have 1, 2, 3, or all 4 options correct. Selecting even one wrong option among your choices triggers a -2 penalty. This rewards genuine understanding over guessing.

The partial marking system for multiple correct questions is a double-edged sword: you earn partial credit for partial knowledge, but a single wrong selection wipes that out and penalises you heavily. The best strategy is: for multiple correct questions, only select options you are highly confident are correct.

Integer Questions — Safe Attempts

Integer/numerical questions in JEE Advanced (where you enter a specific number) carry no negative marking. These are your safest scoring opportunities. Always attempt all integer questions, even with an educated estimate. A wrong integer answer costs you nothing, while a correct one adds 3–4 marks.

More questions about JEE Advanced marking scheme

1
What is the marking scheme for multiple correct questions in JEE Advanced?
Multiple correct questions (where 1 or more options are correct) in JEE Advanced: Full marks (+4) for selecting all correct options. Partial marks for selecting some but not all correct options (no wrong ones selected). -2 penalty if you select any incorrect option. 0 if unattempted. This partial marking system is unique to JEE Advanced and rewards careful reasoning.
2
Does JEE Advanced have paragraph-based questions?
Yes. JEE Advanced often includes paragraph-based sections where a long reading passage is followed by 3–4 questions. These can be single correct or multiple correct type with the same marking rules. Some years also include matrix match (matching) questions with different marking schemes. Check the latest JEE Advanced information brochure for exact question types each year.
3
How is partial marking calculated in JEE Advanced multiple correct questions?
Partial marking applies when you select some but not all correct options AND no incorrect option. The formula: Partial marks = (4 × number of correct options selected) / (total number of correct options). For example, if 3 options are correct and you select 2: partial marks = (4 × 2) / 3 = 2.67 marks (rounded to nearest 0.5).
4
Are integer/numerical questions in JEE Advanced also without negative marking?
Yes. Integer-type (numerical answer) questions in JEE Advanced carry +3 or +4 marks for correct answers and 0 for wrong answers — no negative marking. These questions require you to type a specific integer or decimal value. Since there is no penalty, always attempt these questions even if you are not fully certain.
