What the CBT Interface Looks Like

When you sit at the computer terminal, the JEE Advanced interface displays the question on the left and answer options (or an input box for integer-type) on the right. A question palette on the right side of the screen shows all question numbers colour-coded by status: green (answered), red (not answered), purple (marked for review), and grey (not visited).

You can navigate freely between questions within a section. The timer is shown prominently. Unlike OMR sheets where a wrong bubble fill could cost you, CBT allows changing answers until you lock them in — reducing accidental errors.

Practise the CBT Interface Before Exam

IIT releases an official mock test at jeeadv.ac.in that simulates the real exam interface. Practising on this is strongly recommended, especially for integer-type questions where you type a numerical value using the on-screen keypad. Getting familiar with navigation and time management in CBT mode can make a meaningful difference in performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Advanced exam format

When did JEE Advanced switch to online (CBT) mode?

JEE Advanced switched from pen-paper (offline) to Computer Based Test (CBT) in 2018. Before 2018, it was conducted in offline mode with OMR sheets. Since 2018, both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are fully online at designated computer terminals.

Is internet required during JEE Advanced CBT exam?

No. The JEE Advanced CBT runs on a local server at the exam centre — you do not need an internet connection. Your answers are saved on the local server. Power backup and technical support are provided at all exam centres to ensure smooth conduct.

Can I do rough work during JEE Advanced CBT?

Yes. A scribble pad (rough paper) is provided at the exam centre for calculations. You cannot carry your own rough paper or take the scribble pad home. All rough work must be done on the pad provided. The pad is collected by invigilators after the exam.

Is JEE Advanced conducted abroad (international centres)?

Yes. JEE Advanced 2026 had international exam centres for NRI/OCI candidates in countries including UAE (Dubai), USA, Singapore, and Ethiopia. The exam format is the same CBT mode. International candidates must select international centre during registration.

How is the JEE Advanced CBT interface different from JEE Main?

Both use CBT format, but JEE Advanced has more complex question types. JEE Advanced has single correct, multiple correct, integer type, and matrix match questions — each with different answer input methods. JEE Advanced mock tests are available at jeeadv.ac.in and candidates should practice these before the exam.
