Does JEE Advanced Have 2 Papers?

Yes. JEE Advanced has Paper 1 AND Paper 2 — both mandatory. Paper 1 is held in the morning (9 AM–12 PM) and Paper 2 in the afternoon (2:30 PM–5:30 PM) on the same day. Your JEE Advanced rank is determined by the aggregate marks of both papers combined.

Why Two Papers on the Same Day?

JEE Advanced is designed to be a single-day exam with two papers to comprehensively test candidates across different question types and thinking styles. Paper 1 might focus more on calculation-intensive problems, while Paper 2 tests conceptual depth — or vice versa. Having two papers ensures a more robust and differentiated ranking.

The 2.5-hour gap between papers (12 PM to 2:30 PM) gives candidates time for lunch and brief rest. Use this time wisely: eat a light meal, review any mistakes from Paper 1, but do not spend too much mental energy analysing — save focus for Paper 2.

Ranking Based on Combined Score

Your JEE Advanced All India Rank (AIR) is based on the combined marks from both papers (Paper 1 + Paper 2 = 360 total marks in 2026). Subject-wise aggregate across both papers must meet minimum qualifying marks. Missing either paper results in automatic disqualification from ranking, regardless of how well you performed in the other paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Advanced papers and structure

1
What happens if I miss Paper 2 in JEE Advanced?
If you appear only in Paper 1 and miss Paper 2 (or vice versa), you will NOT be ranked in JEE Advanced. Both papers are compulsory. Missing even one paper means you are not eligible for IIT admission through that year's JEE Advanced. There is no provision for appearing in only one paper.
2
Is the difficulty level of Paper 1 and Paper 2 the same?
Paper 1 and Paper 2 cover the same subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) but have different question sets and can vary in difficulty. Typically, one paper may feel harder than the other depending on the year. Both are 3 hours each. Candidates should not be disheartened by a hard Paper 1 — Paper 2 can compensate.
3
What are the timings for JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2?
JEE Advanced Paper 1 is held from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (morning session). Paper 2 is from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM (afternoon session). Both are 3 hours each on the same day. In 2026, JEE Advanced was conducted on May 17, 2026.
4
Do JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2 have the same question types?
Paper 1 and Paper 2 both contain Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics sections. The question types (single correct, multiple correct, integer) may differ between papers. Typically, each paper has 3 sections per subject with different question types. The exact pattern is announced in the JEE Advanced Information Brochure each year.
5
How is the JEE Advanced rank calculated from 2 papers?
JEE Advanced rank is based on aggregate marks = Paper 1 marks + Paper 2 marks. The qualifying criteria also requires subject-wise minimum marks across both papers combined. There is no separate ranking for Paper 1 or Paper 2 — only the combined performance determines AIR.
