Supernumerary Quota for NE States & UTs

CSAB 2026 NEUT SR1 — Eligibility, Dates & How It Works

Everything North Eastern states and UT candidates need to know about the NEUT supernumerary channel running alongside CSAB Special Round 1.

Who Qualifies for NEUT SR1

Domicile Requirement

Bona fide resident of a North Eastern state (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) or Sikkim, or a covered UT.

JEE Main 2026 Qualified

Must have a valid JEE Main 2026 rank just like any other CSAB candidate — NEUT doesn't replace this requirement.

Class 12 Criteria

75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST) or top 20 percentile — same bar applies to NEUT candidates.

Certificate Proof

Domicile/residence certificate uploaded during CSAB registration to verify NEUT eligibility.

How the NEUT Supernumerary Quota Actually Works

NEUT seats are created as supernumerary — meaning they sit outside and in addition to an institute's regularly sanctioned intake for a branch. This is a fundamentally different mechanism from reservation categories like OBC-NCL or SC/ST, which carve out a percentage of the existing seat pool. A NEUT candidate is not competing with the General, EWS, or other category pools for the same fixed number of seats; instead, institutes add extra seats specifically to accommodate eligible NEUT candidates, which is why this channel doesn't reduce the seat count available to other CSAB applicants.

A common misconception is that NEUT is a separate round with its own distinct dates. In practice, NEUT SR1 is folded into the same registration, choice-locking, and reporting timeline as the regular CSAB SR1 — registration closed on csab.nic.in on August 3, and the system automatically considered NEUT eligibility (verified via domicile certificate) when running the SR1 allotment, declared on August 6, 2026. There is no separate NEUT login or portal. The SR2 result was declared on August 12, 2026, completing the CSAB 2026 counselling cycle.

For candidates who qualify, one underappreciated detail is that NEUT eligibility can be combined with category reservation. A NEUT-eligible SC or ST candidate, for instance, can potentially be considered under both the NEUT supernumerary pool and the SC/ST reservation pool depending on how their choice list is structured, effectively broadening their odds relative to a General-category candidate with a similar rank who isn't NEUT-eligible.

Institute-tier availability for NEUT seats tends to concentrate more heavily at NITs and a subset of IIITs than at GFTIs, though this varies by year and by how many supernumerary seats each institute has been sanctioned for 2026. Because CSAB expanded to roughly 114 institutes and ~48,000 total seats this cycle (up sharply from ~14,000 in 2025), NEUT candidates should check the seat matrix carefully rather than assuming last year's institute list applies unchanged — see the CSAB seat matrix for the final SR2 numbers.

Finally, since CSAB has not published a NEUT-specific sub-schedule distinct from the main SR1 timeline, treat this page's dates as the best available estimate and verify directly on csab.nic.in. Registration closed August 3; the SR1 result was declared Aug 6 and the SR2 result was declared Aug 12, 2026, marking the end of CSAB 2026 counselling. If NEUT ever runs on a shifted timeline in a future cycle, the difference is likely to be measured in days, not weeks, given how tightly the whole CSAB calendar is compressed after JoSAA.

Tips for NEUT-Eligible Candidates

  • Upload your domicile certificate correctly during registration — a missing or incorrectly categorized certificate can cause your NEUT status not to register.
  • List both NEUT and regular choices in your single choice list — you're not restricted to only supernumerary seats.
  • Verify institute-wise NEUT seat availability on csab.nic.in once registration opens — don't assume last year's list carries over.

CSAB 2026 NEUT SR1 – FAQs

Common questions about CSAB NEUT eligibility and Special Round 1

1
What is the CSAB NEUT round and who is it for?
CSAB NEUT (North Eastern states and Union Territories) is a supernumerary counselling channel that allots additional seats — created over and above the regular sanctioned intake — specifically for candidates domiciled in North Eastern states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim) and certain Union Territories. These seats exist alongside, not instead of, the regular CSAB Special Round seats, giving eligible candidates an additional avenue at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
2
When does CSAB NEUT SR1 happen in 2026?
CSAB NEUT SR1 ran alongside the main CSAB Special Round 1 window rather than as a separately scheduled round — registration ran July 28–August 3, choice locking closed August 5 (2:00 PM), and the SR1 result was declared August 6, 2026, with seat acceptance/reporting during August 6–11, 2026. CSAB did not publish a distinct NEUT-only sub-schedule, so the main SR1 dates applied. The SR2 result — CSAB 2026's final round — was declared August 12, 2026, completing the counselling cycle.
3
How is NEUT SR1 different from the regular CSAB SR1?
The core process — registration, choice locking, and reporting — is identical, but NEUT candidates are allotted against a separate supernumerary seat pool that doesn't compete with the general CSAB pool. This means a NEUT-eligible candidate's chances aren't reduced by the broader CSAB applicant volume, since these seats are specifically reserved outside the regular sanctioned intake at participating institutes.
4
Do I need separate registration for NEUT seats?
No separate portal or registration form exists for NEUT — eligible candidates register on the same csab.nic.in portal during the standard CSAB registration window and indicate their NEUT eligibility (domicile/category proof) during the registration process. Your NEUT eligibility is verified through domicile and category certificates uploaded at registration, not through a distinct application.
5
Which candidates qualify for CSAB NEUT eligibility?
Eligibility is primarily domicile-based: candidates who are bona fide residents of the North Eastern states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) and Sikkim, along with candidates from specific Union Territories covered under the scheme, qualify for NEUT supernumerary seats. You must still meet the same JEE Main 2026 qualification and Class 12 criteria (75% aggregate, or 65% for SC/ST, or top 20 percentile) as any other CSAB candidate — NEUT status doesn't waive the base eligibility bar.
6
Can a NEUT-eligible candidate also compete for regular CSAB seats?
Yes. NEUT eligibility doesn't restrict you to only supernumerary seats — you can list both regular and NEUT-quota institute-branch combinations in the same choice list, and the algorithm considers you for whichever seat matches your rank and preference order first. This dual eligibility is one of the more overlooked advantages of the NEUT channel, effectively giving eligible candidates a wider effective seat pool than General or other category candidates at the same rank.
7
Are NEUT seats available at all CSAB institutes?
No, NEUT supernumerary seats are typically concentrated at a defined subset of participating institutes and specific branches rather than uniformly available across all ~114 CSAB institutes. Availability can also vary year to year based on how many supernumerary seats each institute has been sanctioned. Always check the seat matrix on csab.nic.in during the registration window (from July 28, 2026) to see exactly which institutes offer NEUT seats before finalizing your choice list.
