MHT CET 2026 CAP Round 3 Seat Allotment

The last of the three centralized CAP rounds before institute-level admissions begin — eligibility, realistic seat expectations, and what to do to secure your final admission.

CAP Round 1 was declared August 2, 2026, Round 2 on August 12, 2026, and Round 3 provisional allotment on August 24, 2026. A Round 4 (Non-CAP/Vacancy round) followed from September 3, 2026, to fill remaining seats. Verify your latest status at cetcell.mahacet.org.

Why CAP Round 3 Is Different From Rounds 1 and 2

CAP Round 3 is, in most CAP cycles run by DTE Maharashtra's CET Cell, the final centralized round before the process transitions to institute-level admissions. This changes the strategic calculus for candidates significantly: where Round 1 and Round 2 are about optimizing for the best possible seat, Round 3 is often about securing any acceptable seat before losing access to the rank-based, transparent CAP system altogether. Candidates who treat Round 3 the same way they treated Round 1 — holding out for a dream college — sometimes end up with a worse outcome than if they had frozen a reasonable Round 3 seat.

The seat matrix by Round 3 looks structurally different from earlier rounds. Flagship autonomous institutes such as VJTI Mumbai, COEP Pune, and ICT Mumbai typically have negligible vacancies left in Computer Science, IT, or AI & Data Science for general Home University candidates — whatever vacancies exist tend to skew toward Other Than Home University (OHU) or State Level quota seats, or reserved categories with smaller eligible pools. Meanwhile, private engineering colleges and traditionally less-preferred branches (Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Textile) make up the bulk of the Round 3 vacancy list, even though many of these colleges have solid placement records worth researching individually rather than dismissing outright.

A recurring mistake at this stage is candidates assuming the Home University/OHU/State Level quota logic no longer matters because "most seats are open by now." In reality, the three-tier split is recalculated fresh for every round, and a genuinely useful nuance of CAP Round 3 is that OHU and State Level seats at reputed government-aided colleges sometimes become disproportionately available once Home University demand is exhausted — meaning out-of-region candidates occasionally find Round 3 more favorable at specific colleges than earlier rounds were.

Reservation-category and TFWS (Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme) seats continue through Round 3 on their own tracks. TFWS, which caps at 5% of sanctioned intake per college for income-eligible candidates, sometimes shows meaningful Round 3 vacancy even at colleges where the general fee-paying seats are fully subscribed, since the eligible candidate pool for TFWS is inherently smaller — always check this column separately rather than assuming TFWS mirrors the general seat matrix.

Because CAP Round 3 is usually your last centralized opportunity, the Freeze-versus-Betterment decision carries more weight than in earlier rounds. If you receive an acceptable seat in Round 3, strongly consider Freezing immediately rather than gambling on institute-level admissions afterward, which are considerably less predictable, less transparent, and generally involve lower-ranked outcomes than what CAP itself offers.

Steps After CAP Round 3 Result

1

Check your allotment on cetcell.mahacet.org

Log in with your CAP credentials to view your Round 3 result and compare it against your Round 2 seat, if any.

2

Strongly consider Freezing if the seat is acceptable

Since this is typically the final centralized round, Freezing a reasonable seat is usually safer than risking institute-level admission.

3

Pay the fee and complete document verification

Pay any fee difference and complete required document verification at the allotted institute or a Facilitation Centre within the deadline.

4

If still unallotted, contact institutes directly

Approach colleges with vacant seats for institute-level admission — this is a decentralized process outside the CET Cell portal.

Frequently Asked Questions – MHT CET 2026 CAP Round 3

Common questions about MHT CET 2026 CAP Round 3, the final centralized round

1
Is CAP Round 3 the last round in MHT CET 2026 counselling?
CAP Round 3 was the last of the three standard centralized CAP rounds conducted by the Maharashtra State CET Cell (DTE Maharashtra) for 2026 engineering admissions, with provisional allotment released August 24, 2026. Because a large number of seats (28,000+) remained vacant after Round 3, the CET Cell additionally ran a Round 4 (Non-CAP/Vacancy round) from September 3, 2026. Following that round, remaining vacant seats were filled through institute-level admissions, concluding the 2026 admission cycle.
2
Who is eligible to participate in CAP Round 3?
Candidates who chose Betterment after CAP Round 2 and were not upgraded, and candidates who were not allotted any seat through Rounds 1 and 2, are automatically carried forward into CAP Round 3. Candidates who Froze their seat in an earlier round have exited the process and are not eligible. In some years, the CET Cell also opens a limited fresh-registration window specifically for CAP Round 3 if seat vacancies are unusually high — check the official CAP Round 3 notification for that year's specific provision.
3
What kind of seats are typically available in CAP Round 3?
By CAP Round 3, flagship autonomous institutes like VJTI Mumbai, COEP Pune, and ICT Mumbai have almost no seats left in popular branches such as Computer Science or IT for the general Home University category. CAP Round 3 vacancies tend to concentrate in private engineering colleges, less-popular branches (Civil, Mechanical, Textile, and similar), and OHU/State Level quota seats at mid-tier government-aided colleges. Candidates should treat CAP Round 3 as an opportunity to secure any reasonable seat rather than expecting a major upgrade from Round 2.
4
What happens after CAP Round 3 if I'm still not allotted a seat?
If you remain unallotted after CAP Round 3 and the subsequent Round 4 (Non-CAP/Vacancy round, from September 3, 2026), your options shift to institute-level admissions, where colleges with vacant seats conduct their own admission process directly — often on a first-come, first-served or spot-admission basis rather than strict CET merit order. You would need to approach these colleges individually rather than through the cetcell.mahacet.org portal. It's worth also comparing this against other counsellings such as JEE Main-based options if you hold a valid JEE Main score, since roughly 20% of Maharashtra engineering seats use JEE Main merit alongside MHT CET.
5
Does the Home University quota still apply in CAP Round 3?
Yes. The Home University / Other Than Home University (OHU) / State Level three-tier seat split continues to apply through CAP Round 3 exactly as in earlier rounds, recalculated against the latest vacancy position. By Round 3, OHU and State Level seats often make up a larger proportion of the remaining vacancy list at reputed colleges, since Home University seats at those colleges are typically exhausted earlier — so out-of-region candidates sometimes find CAP Round 3 more favorable than earlier rounds for specific institutes.
6
Can I get a TFWS (Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme) seat in CAP Round 3?
Yes, if you applied under the TFWS category on your original option form, TFWS seats — reserved for income-eligible candidates with a full tuition fee waiver, capped at 5% of sanctioned intake per college — continue to be allotted through CAP Round 3 as part of the same process. Check the TFWS-specific vacancy column separately in your Round 3 result, since TFWS seat availability doesn't always match the general fee-paying seat matrix at the same institute.
7
Should I choose Freeze immediately if I get a seat in CAP Round 3?
In most cases, yes — since CAP Round 3 is typically the final centralized round, choosing Freeze locks in your admission and avoids the uncertainty and lower seat availability of institute-level admissions. Only avoid Freezing if you have a strong, near-certain alternative already lined up (such as a confirmed seat through another counselling process), since institute-level seats after CAP Round 3 are considerably less predictable and often lower-ranked than what you'd secure through CAP itself.
