Round 2 Dynamics – Upgrades and New Allotments

JoSAA Round 2 is where the counselling process gets dynamic. Candidates who received allotments in Round 1 have three choices: Freeze (accept and exit upgrade process), Float (keep current seat, try to upgrade to higher preference), or Slide (upgrade within same institute only).

Candidates choosing Float or Slide create vacancies in their Round 1 allotted programmes if they upgrade. This means Round 2 can open seats in programmes that were closed in Round 1. In JoSAA 2025, Round 2 saw NIT Warangal CSE closing rank relax from ~1,900 to ~2,050 as some Round 1 allottees upgraded to better IIT branches.

New candidates (those without Round 1 allotment) are automatically reconsidered in Round 2 without any action needed. If their rank now matches an available seat in their preference list, they receive an allotment.

Round 2 typically concludes within 3–4 days of Round 1 result. Candidates must pay seat acceptance fee within the published deadline — typically 24–48 hours after result declaration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JoSAA Round 2 allotment and upgrade strategy

1
What changes between Round 1 and Round 2 in JoSAA?
Between rounds, candidates who accepted seats in Round 1 can upgrade (float/slide), leading to vacancies in less-preferred programmes. This causes Round 2 closing ranks to be slightly more relaxed in some programmes. First-time allottees also join if they weren't allotted in Round 1.
2
Can I get a better college in Round 2 if I got a seat in Round 1?
Yes, if you chose 'Float' in Round 1. Float means you accept the current seat but remain in consideration for higher-preference choices. If a better-ranked choice opens in Round 2, you'll be automatically upgraded. Your previous seat is released.
3
What is the risk of choosing Float in Round 2?
There is minimal risk in Float. You are guaranteed to not go below your current allotment — you can only upgrade or stay. The only risk is losing a seat if you choose 'Slide' but the institute-level preference upgrades you to a branch you didn't want. Always review your preference order before each round.
4
How much do cutoffs relax from Round 1 to Round 2?
Relaxation varies by programme. Popular programmes like IIT/NIT top CSE seats relax by 50–200 ranks between rounds. Less-demanded programmes can relax by 500–2000 ranks as candidates upgrade away. Overall, Round 2 is a good opportunity for students who missed by a small margin in Round 1.
5
Is there a fee to be paid after Round 2 allotment?
Yes. After each allotment round, you must pay the seat acceptance fee (₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD and ₹35,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS) online within the deadline. Failure to pay within the deadline forfeits your allotment for that round.
