Understanding JoSAA Round 1 Allotment

JoSAA 2026 Round 1 allotment was released on June 13, 2026. It was the first official seat offer in the counselling process. Every candidate who registered and submitted choices participated in Round 1 allotment simultaneously.

Round 1 closing ranks are the strictest of all rounds because the full candidate pool is active. As candidates accept seats or upgrade, later rounds see relaxed cutoffs in less-demanded programmes and tighter cutoffs in popular ones.

Key Round 1 strategy: Freeze if you get your top choice. Choose Float to upgrade to a better-ranked college/branch while retaining your current allotment as fallback. Choose Slide to upgrade within the same institute only. Do not withdraw unless you have a specific reason.

JoSAA 2026 ran 5 rounds: Round 1 (June 13), Round 2 (June 30), Round 3 (July 6), Round 4 (July 10) and the final Round 5 (July 16). There is no Round 6 in JoSAA 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JoSAA Round 1 allotment and prediction

1
How does JoSAA Round 1 allotment work?
In Round 1, JoSAA allocates seats based on your ranked preference list and your JEE rank. The system works top-down — if your rank satisfies the closing rank of your 1st choice, you get it. If not, it moves to your 2nd choice, and so on. Round 1 generally has tighter (better) closing ranks than final rounds.
2
Are Round 1 closing ranks better or worse than the final round?
Round 1 closing ranks are numerically smaller (i.e., stricter) than the final round. Popular programmes like IIT Bombay CSE or NIT Trichy CSE fill up in Round 1 itself. Less popular programmes progressively open up in later rounds as candidates accept and exit.
3
Should I freeze my seat after Round 1 if I get my preferred college?
You should freeze only if you are happy with the allotment. If you got your top choice, freeze immediately. If you got a lower-preference college, choose 'Float' or 'Slide' to automatically upgrade in later rounds without losing your current seat.
4
What percentage of seats are filled in Round 1?
Typically 60–70% of highly-demanded programme seats (IIT CSE, NIT Trichy CSE) are filled in Round 1. Less competitive programmes may have only 20–30% seats filled, with remaining seats allotted in Rounds 2–5.
5
If I don't get an allotment in Round 1, am I out?
No. If you don't receive any allotment in Round 1, you remain in the pool for subsequent rounds. Update your preference list if needed before each round's lock deadline to improve your chances in Rounds 2–5.
