JoSAA College Predictor – All 6 Rounds Explained

Understand how your predicted college list shifts from Round 1 to Round 6 of JoSAA 2026

Why Predictions Differ Round to Round

JoSAA allotment happens over 6 rounds. In Round 1, the allotment is based purely on preference order and rank — nobody has frozen, floated, or withdrawn yet, so closing ranks are at their tightest. As rounds progress, candidates who got a better offer elsewhere free up their earlier seat, which is why closing ranks for most institute-branch combinations tend to loosen (move to higher, more accessible ranks) with each successive round.

This is why a prediction run only on Round 1 data can understate your real chances — many candidates checking our JEE Main College Predictor or JEE Advanced College Predictor for the first time are surprised to find their options widen meaningfully by Round 3 or 4.

Round 6 is typically the final JoSAA round. Seats still vacant afterward move to CSAB Special Rounds, which run their own separate, usually higher-rank cutoffs on the leftover seat pool.

Frequently Asked Questions – JoSAA Rounds

Common questions about how predictions change across JoSAA rounds

1
How many rounds does JoSAA counselling have?
JoSAA typically conducts 6 rounds of seat allotment. After each round, candidates can choose to accept & freeze, float (remain open to a better preference), slide (seek a better branch within the same institute), or withdraw.
2
Do cutoffs always go up (get worse) in later rounds?
Not always, but generally yes for most seats — as higher-rank candidates freeze or move to better options, seats vacate and become available to candidates with ranks further down the list, pushing the closing rank up (worse) in later rounds. A small number of highly specific seats can occasionally tighten if many candidates float into them.
3
Should I run the predictor again after every round?
Yes — rechecking the predictor using each round's updated opening/closing ranks (once published by JoSAA) gives you a much more current picture than relying only on Round 1 data, especially if you're on the margin for a particular institute-branch.
4
What's the difference between 'float' and 'freeze' in JoSAA?
Freezing locks in your current seat permanently — you exit further rounds. Floating keeps you in the running for a better preference in subsequent rounds while still holding your current seat as a fallback. Sliding is similar to floating but restricted to options within the same institute.
5
Does the last round matter if I already have a seat I like?
If you've frozen your seat, no — you're out of the process. If you're still floating by the final round, that round is your last chance to get a better allotment; any seat allotted and unresponded to by the final round deadline is typically auto-frozen.
