JoSAA 2027 Process Explained

Upgradation vs Float in JoSAA 2027

Upgradation is the result; Float (or Slide) is the choice that unlocks it.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official round-wise schedule exists as of October 2026. The relationship between upgradation and the Float/Slide mechanism is a stable, unchanging feature of JoSAA counselling. Only specific 2027 dates and round counts are hedged — verify at josaa.nic.in once released.

Upgradation Is an Outcome, Not a Choice

A common point of confusion among first-time JoSAA candidates is treating "upgradation" as if it were a fourth response option alongside Freeze, Float, and Slide. It is not. The only choices you ever actively make are Freeze, Float, or Slide. Upgradation is simply the term for what happens when Float or Slide successfully moves you to a better seat in a later round.

In other words: Float and Slide are the mechanisms you select; upgradation is the possible result of having selected one of them. If you freeze, upgradation is no longer possible for you, since you've exited the process.

How an Upgradation Actually Happens

  1. 1

    A Seat Becomes Vacant

A candidate ranked above you at a seat on your preference list freezes elsewhere, floats/slides away, or withdraws.

  2. 2

    JoSAA Re-Runs Allotment

In the next round, the algorithm re-processes all floating/sliding candidates against newly available seats using locked choice lists.

  3. 3

You Are Checked Against Your List

If your rank qualifies you for that vacant seat and it's ranked higher than your current seat, you are moved there.

  4. 4

    Your Seat Updates

Your new, better seat replaces the earlier one. You again choose Freeze, Float, or Slide for the next round.

Key Takeaways

  • Upgradation = the result; Float/Slide = the choices that make it possible.
  • Upgradation never happens if you freeze — you've exited the allotment process.
  • Upgradation is automatic once you float or slide — no extra request needed each round.
  • Upgradation can never move you to a worse seat than your current one.

Open guide
1
Is upgradation a separate option from Float?
No. Upgradation is not something you select directly — it is the possible outcome of choosing Float or Slide. When you float or slide, you become eligible for upgradation; the actual upgrade (or lack of one) happens automatically through JoSAA's allotment algorithm in the next round.
2
What triggers an upgradation in JoSAA?
Upgradation happens when a seat you ranked higher than your current allotment becomes available — because another candidate above you froze elsewhere, floated/slid away, withdrew, or didn't respond. JoSAA then fills that vacancy using the algorithm, and if you qualify for it based on rank and choice order, you are moved up.
3
Does upgradation happen automatically, or do I need to request it?
It happens automatically. Once you choose Float or Slide, no further action is needed from you each round to be considered for upgradation — the algorithm re-evaluates your position against your locked choice list in every subsequent round.
4
Can upgradation downgrade my current seat?
No. This is a consistent, stable guarantee across all JoSAA cycles: both Float and Slide only ever move you up your preference list or keep you unchanged — never down. This is a key reason candidates are advised to float rather than freeze unless fully satisfied.
5
After how many rounds does upgradation stop?
Upgradation opportunities continue through every round of that year's JoSAA counselling, based on the total number of rounds conducted (this has varied — 2025 had 6 rounds, 2026 had 5). Once the final round closes, no further upgradation is possible within JoSAA; any residual seats move to CSAB afterward.
