What Is Slide in JoSAA 2027?
Stay at your current institute, keep chasing a better branch there — never a different institute.
Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official brochure, dates, or round-wise schedule exist as of October 2026. The Slide mechanism described here is a stable, consistent feature of JoSAA counselling across recent cycles (2024–2026) and is confidently expected to apply the same way in 2027. Only specific 2027 dates are hedged — verify at josaa.nic.in once released.
Slide: The Definition
Slide is the response option that locks in your institute while still letting you chase a branch upgrade at that very institute. When you choose Slide after a round, JoSAA keeps you fixed at your currently allotted institute and only re-evaluates you against other branch choices you ranked at that same institute in your locked choice list.
This is narrower than Float, which considers your entire choice list across every institute type. Slide is useful specifically when the institute itself matters more to you than the branch — for example, a candidate who wants to stay at a particular NIT for its location or reputation but hopes to move from a less-preferred branch to a more-preferred one at that same NIT.
How Slide Works, Round by Round
- 1
You Receive a Seat
You are allotted a specific institute-branch combination in a round based on your locked choices and rank.
- 2
You Choose Slide
You select Slide, fixing the institute and opening up only branch-level reconsideration at that institute.
- 3
Algorithm Re-Runs Next Round
JoSAA checks only your other ranked choices at the same institute for a possible upgrade.
- 4
Branch Upgrade or No Change
You move to a better-ranked branch at the same institute, or stay exactly where you are.
- 5
Repeat or Freeze
Continue sliding in later rounds, or freeze once satisfied with your branch.
When Slide Makes Sense
- You specifically want to stay at your current institute regardless of branch options elsewhere.
- You ranked multiple branches at the same institute but got allotted a lower-ranked one.
- Home-state advantage, location, or family preference ties you to this particular institute.
- You are not interested in any institute other than the one you're currently allotted to.
