JoSAA 2027 Response Options

Slide vs Float in JoSAA 2027 — What's the Difference?

One upgrades within an institute, the other upgrades across your whole choice list.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official dates exist as of October 2026. The Slide and Float mechanisms themselves are stable, unchanging features of JoSAA counselling and are confidently explained below. Only specific 2027 dates are hedged — verify at josaa.nic.in once released.

Example Scenario

Suppose a candidate is allotted Mechanical Engineering at NIT Trichy, but had ranked Computer Science at NIT Trichy, as well as Computer Science at a different NIT, higher on their choice list.

If they choose Slide: JoSAA will only check if NIT Trichy CSE becomes available for them — it will not consider the other NIT's CSE seat, even though it's ranked higher.

If they choose Float: JoSAA checks the entire ranked list — both NIT Trichy CSE and the other NIT's CSE are in play, and whichever is ranked higher and becomes available first is offered.

Quick Decision Guide

  • Choose Float if you'd accept a better branch at a different institute too.
  • Choose Slide if the institute itself is non-negotiable for you.
  • Don't choose Slide expecting it to also check other institutes — it won't.

1
What is the core difference between Slide and Float?
Slide only considers branches within your currently allotted institute for an upgrade. Float considers your entire ranked choice list across every institute type (IIT, NIT, IIIT, GFTI) you originally chose. Slide is institute-locked; Float is open across institutes.
2
Which is better — Slide or Float?
Neither is universally better; it depends on your priority. If staying at your current institute matters more than branch, choose Slide. If you are open to a better branch or institute anywhere on your original choice list, choose Float. Most candidates who are not fully satisfied tend to choose Float since it is the broader option.
3
Can I choose both Slide and Float at the same time?
No. In each round, you select exactly one response per allotted seat — Freeze, Float, or Slide. You cannot combine them; they represent three distinct, mutually exclusive instructions to the algorithm for that round.
4
Does Float include everything Slide can do?
Effectively yes — since Float considers your full ranked list, it technically also captures within-institute branch upgrades the same way Slide would. The reason Slide exists separately is for candidates who specifically do NOT want to be moved to a different institute even if a higher-ranked choice at another institute exists.
5
Will the Slide vs Float distinction remain the same in JoSAA 2027?
Yes, this is a core structural feature of the JoSAA seat allotment mechanism that has remained consistent for years and is confidently expected to continue unchanged in 2027. Only specific round dates for 2027 are not yet known.
