JoSAA 2027 Response Options

What Is Freeze in JoSAA 2027?

Accept your seat, exit counselling for good — the most permanent of the three response options.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official brochure, dates, or round-wise schedule exist as of October 2026. The Freeze/Float/Slide mechanism described below is a stable feature of JoSAA counselling that has worked the same way across recent cycles (2024–2026) and is confidently expected to carry over unchanged to 2027. Only specific 2027 dates are hedged — verify those at josaa.nic.in once released.

Freeze: The Definition

After every round of JoSAA seat allotment, each allotted candidate must choose one of three responses: Freeze, Float, or Slide. Freeze is the simplest and most final of the three — it means you fully accept the seat you have been allotted and want to exit the counselling process immediately, with no further participation in any later round.

Once you freeze, JoSAA will not consider you for any upgrade, better branch, or different institute in subsequent rounds — even if a seat you would have preferred becomes vacant later. Your admission to the frozen seat proceeds through the standard document verification and fee payment steps, and that institute-branch combination becomes your final allotment for the year.

What Happens After You Freeze

  1. 1

    Seat Acceptance

Pay the seat acceptance fee within the response window to confirm you are accepting the allotted seat.

  2. 2

    Document Verification

Complete online or physical document verification as per that year's process, confirming category, eligibility, and identity documents.

  3. 3

    Exit from Further Rounds

You are removed from consideration in all later allotment rounds — no upgrade is possible within JoSAA after this point.

  4. 4

    Reporting to Institute

Report to your allotted institute as per the admission schedule to complete the admission formally.

Freeze vs Float vs Slide — Quick Comparison

Freeze: Accept the seat and exit the process entirely. No further allotment.

Float: Keep the current seat as a safety net while still being considered for better options at other institutes/institute types too.

Slide: Keep the current seat as a safety net while being considered only for a better branch within the same institute.

1
What exactly does Freeze mean in JoSAA?
Freeze is one of the response options JoSAA gives you after each round of seat allotment. Choosing Freeze means you accept your currently allotted seat as final and exit the counselling process entirely — you will not be considered in any further allotment rounds, and no better seat will be offered to you even if one becomes available later.
2
Can I still change my branch after freezing in JoSAA 2027?
No. Once you freeze, you are completely out of the JoSAA allotment process for that year. The only route to change institute or branch afterward is outside JoSAA entirely — for example applying for an institute-level branch change later (where offered) or exploring CSAB if you withdrew rather than froze. Freeze itself is final within JoSAA.
3
Is Freeze the same as not responding at all?
No. If you fail to respond with any choice (Freeze/Float/Slide) within the response window, this has historically been treated differently from an active Freeze — non-response can risk forfeiting the seat and security deposit depending on that year's rules. Always actively select Freeze rather than letting the deadline pass.
4
When should I choose Freeze instead of Float or Slide?
Choose Freeze when you are fully satisfied with the allotted institute and branch and do not want to risk it in later rounds. Since Float and Slide only try to improve your seat (they never downgrade you), Freeze is specifically for candidates who want zero further changes and want to lock in admission formalities immediately.
5
Does freezing require fee payment in JoSAA 2027?
Based on the consistent process across past cycles, yes — after choosing Freeze you must complete seat acceptance by paying the applicable fee within the stipulated window to confirm your admission. Exact 2027 fee amounts and deadlines are not yet published; this describes the stable step, not the 2027 figure.
6
Are the 2027 response-window dates for Freeze available yet?
No. As of October 2026, JoSAA has not released its 2027 schedule, so exact dates for when the Freeze option will be available in each round are unknown. This page explains the stable, unchanging mechanism — confirm exact 2027 dates at josaa.nic.in once published.
