JoSAA 2027 Process Guide

JoSAA 2027 Round-Wise Allotment Explained

How each round matches ranks to choices, and how vacancies carry forward.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official schedule or round count exists as of October 2026. The round-wise allotment mechanism explained below is stable across years; only the total number of rounds and exact dates vary and remain unconfirmed for 2027.

The Core Mechanism

JoSAA conducts seat allotment in multiple rounds rather than a single pass, because candidate responses (freeze/float/slide/withdraw) after each round open up new vacancies that need to be redistributed. Every round re-runs the same core matching logic: each active candidate's rank is checked against their locked choice list and the currently available seats.

This round-by-round structure has remained consistent for years, even though the exact number of rounds conducted has varied (6 in 2025, 5 in 2026). The mechanism — not the count — is what's stable.

Step-by-Step: What Happens Each Round

  1. 1

    Allotment Result Published

JoSAA publishes that round's seat allotment result on the portal; candidates check status using their credentials.

  2. 2

    Response Window Opens

Allotted candidates choose Freeze, Float, or Slide within a fixed deadline.

  3. 3

    Fee Payment & Document Steps

Regardless of response, candidates typically complete seat acceptance payment and document verification to stay valid in the process.

  4. 4

    Vacancies Compiled

Seats vacated by freezes-elsewhere, withdrawals, or non-responses are compiled into the next round's available pool.

  5. 5

    Next Round Runs

The algorithm re-processes all floating/sliding candidates against the updated seat pool using their locked choices.

  6. 6

    Repeat Until Final Round

This cycle repeats until JoSAA determines that round is the final one for that year, based on vacancy and response trends.

Key Facts to Remember

  • Choices are locked once and reused across every round — no resubmission needed.
  • Each round's outcome depends on responses from the round before it.
  • The total number of rounds is decided dynamically by JoSAA, not fixed in advance.
  • Float and Slide candidates are never downgraded between rounds.

1
How does JoSAA decide allotment in each round?
In every round, JoSAA's algorithm matches each candidate's rank against their locked choice list and the currently available seats (including vacancies carried forward from the previous round). Candidates get the highest-ranked choice on their list for which their rank qualifies, exactly as in the first round — this matching logic doesn't change between rounds.
2
How many rounds does JoSAA usually conduct?
The number of rounds has varied by year — for example, JoSAA 2025 had 6 rounds while JoSAA 2026 had 5. JoSAA decides the round count dynamically based on how many candidates remain active (floating/sliding) and how many seats are still vacant. There is no fixed number guaranteed for 2027.
3
What creates new vacancies between rounds?
Vacancies arise when allotted candidates freeze at a different (lower) seat elsewhere, withdraw entirely, fail document verification, or don't respond within the deadline. These vacated seats become available for floating/sliding candidates in the next round.
4
Do I need to refill choices for every round?
No. Your choice list is locked once during the initial choice filling window and used across all rounds. You only need to respond with Freeze, Float, or Slide after each round — you don't resubmit or reorder choices round to round (unless JoSAA explicitly reopens a choice-editing window, which hasn't been typical in recent years).
5
What happens in the last round?
In the final round of that year (whichever round number it turns out to be for 2027), remaining allotted candidates must respond, complete fee payment and document verification, and report to their institute. Any seats still vacant after the last JoSAA round are typically transferred to CSAB for further rounds.
6
Are JoSAA 2027 round dates published yet?
No. As of October 2026, JoSAA has not released a 2027 schedule, so exact round dates and total round count are unknown. This page explains the stable mechanics of how each round functions, not confirmed 2027 dates.
