JoSAA 2027 Preview

JoSAA 2027 Round 5 — What to Expect

May or may not be the final round — depends on how 2027 plays out.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun as of October 2026, and no official schedule or round count exists yet. Importantly, the total number of rounds is NOT fixed — JoSAA 2025 ran 6 rounds while JoSAA 2026 ran 5. This page explains what Round 5 has historically involved and the honest uncertainty about whether it will be the final round in 2027.

Is Round 5 the Final Round in JoSAA 2027?

There is no fixed answer to this, and candidates should be careful about assuming Round 5 = final round. JoSAA determines the total number of rounds each year dynamically, based on how quickly seats fill up and how many candidates remain actively seeking upgrades. This has produced different round counts across recent years:

  • JoSAA 2025: ran 6 rounds — Round 5 was NOT the final round.
  • JoSAA 2026: ran 5 rounds — Round 5 WAS the final round.

For JoSAA 2027, it genuinely isn't known yet whether the process will conclude at Round 5, extend to Round 6 or beyond, or follow some other pattern. Treat any claim online stating "JoSAA 2027 will have exactly N rounds" with skepticism until JoSAA's official brochure confirms it.

What Typically Happens in Round 5 (Based on Past Patterns)

  1. 1

    Fewer Fresh Vacancies

Most high-demand seats are usually filled by Rounds 1–3; Round 5 vacancies tend to be fewer and more scattered across institutes.

  2. 2

    Float/Slide Processing Continues

Candidates who chose float or slide in earlier rounds are re-evaluated against their locked choice lists.

  3. 3

    Response Window Reopens

Newly allotted or upgraded candidates again choose Freeze, Float, or Slide within the round's response window.

  4. 4

    Decision Point Approaches

Candidates nearing the end of JoSAA's rounds start weighing whether to freeze for certainty or continue floating, since CSAB (for residual seats) typically follows after JoSAA concludes.

Tips if You're Still in the Process by Round 5

  • Keep floating/sliding if you still have unfulfilled higher-ranked choices — it carries zero downside.
  • Start researching CSAB's typical process in parallel, in case JoSAA concludes without allotting your top choice.
  • Don't assume no further rounds will happen — check the official JoSAA portal for round updates rather than relying on assumptions.
  • If genuinely satisfied with your current seat, freezing avoids any risk of rushed decisions near the final round.

1
Will Round 5 be the final round in JoSAA 2027?
It's not possible to say yet. In JoSAA 2026, Round 5 was indeed the final round (5 total rounds). But in JoSAA 2025, there were 6 rounds, so Round 5 was not the last one that year. Whether 2027 follows a 5-round or 6-round (or different) pattern depends on seat vacancies and candidate responses that year — JoSAA decides round count dynamically based on how quickly seats fill up.
2
What typically happens in JoSAA Round 5?
By Round 5, most seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs have usually been filled in earlier rounds. Round 5 typically processes the remaining float/slide movements among candidates still seeking upgrades, plus any seats vacated by candidates who withdrew or didn't respond. Vacancy volume is generally lower than in Rounds 1–3.
3
Are Round 5 seats generally lower-ranked branches/colleges?
Generally, yes — by Round 5, the most sought-after combinations (top IIT branches, top NIT CSE) have usually been allotted already in earlier rounds. Round 5 seats tend to skew toward less competitive branches or institutes, though this varies year to year and isn't a strict rule.
4
Should I keep floating/sliding through Round 5?
If you haven't frozen yet and still have higher-ranked choices pending, continuing to float or slide costs nothing — the mechanism never downgrades you. Many candidates deliberately stay in the process through the last round(s) to maximize their final seat before deciding whether to freeze or move to CSAB.
5
What happens after Round 5 if more rounds follow in 2027?
If JoSAA 2027 follows a pattern with more than 5 rounds (as 2025 did with 6), then candidates who haven't frozen continue into Round 6 under the same float/slide rules. If Round 5 turns out to be the last one (as in 2026), the process moves to final reporting, followed by CSAB for any residual vacancies.
6
Are JoSAA 2027 Round 5 dates available yet?
No. As of October 2026, JoSAA has not released its 2027 schedule, so exact Round 5 dates (or even whether there will be a Round 5 at all, though historically there always has been at least that many) are not known. This page explains the stable process pattern, not confirmed 2027 dates.
