J&K Quota

JoSAA 2026 for J&K Candidates – Special Quota & NIT Seats

Supernumerary seats at NITs outside J&K, home NIT advantage, and everything a J&K domicile student needs for JoSAA 2026.

J&K Quota in JoSAA: Overview

Jammu & Kashmir candidates have three pathways in JoSAA 2026 for NIT admissions, each with different implications:

1. Regular Open/Category Seats (Any NIT Nationwide)

J&K candidates can compete for regular seats (Open, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) at any NIT in India based purely on JEE Main rank. No special quota — pure merit. This is the most competitive pathway.

2. Home State (HS) Quota at NIT Srinagar / NIT Jammu

J&K candidates get Home State quota at NIT Srinagar and NIT Jammu. HS quota closing ranks are better than Other State (OS) quota at these NITs. If you want to study near home, this is advantageous.

3. J&K Supernumerary Quota at Other NITs

Supernumerary seats are created over and above regular intake at NITs outside J&K specifically for J&K domicile candidates. These appear as 'JK' seats in JoSAA seat matrix. Less competition as only J&K candidates can use these.

J&K Quota Availability at NITs

Supernumerary J&K quota seats are available at NITs outside J&K. The number of seats varies by institute and branch. Below is indicative availability at selected NITs:

NITJ&K Seats (CSE)J&K Seats (ECE)J&K CR (CSE, approx)
NIT Trichy22~4,000–6,000
NIT Warangal22~5,000–8,000
NIT Surathkal22~5,000–7,000
NIT Calicut22~6,000–9,000
NIT Allahabad22~8,000–12,000
NIT Rourkela22~7,000–10,000

* Seat counts and Ranks are official figures based on JoSAA 2025. Verify actual numbers in JoSAA 2026 seat matrix when published. JK quota seats are supernumerary — no impact on regular seat availability.

Required Documents for J&K Quota

The J&K domicile law was significantly updated in 2020 (Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate Rules, 2020). Ensure your domicile certificate is current and meets the updated criteria:

J&K Domicile Certificate

Issued under J&K Grant of Domicile Certificate Rules 2020 — must be from competent revenue authority

State Subject Certificate / Permanent Resident Certificate

For those who had PRC before 2019 reorganization — still valid along with new domicile certificate

Class 12 School Certificate

Must show school is located in J&K UT — confirms education from J&K

JEE Main Admit Card and Score Card

Category must match what you declared at JEE registration

Class 12 Marksheet and Class 10 Certificate

Standard document requirements same as all JoSAA candidates

Post-2019 J&K Reorganization Note

J&K was reorganized into two Union Territories (J&K UT and Ladakh UT) in August 2019. Ladakh candidates should check JoSAA 2026 brochure for whether separate provisions exist. J&K UT candidates (Jammu and Kashmir divisions) continue under existing J&K quota provisions.

Choice Filling Strategy for J&K Candidates

J&K candidates have a strategic advantage by having multiple quota options. Here is the recommended approach:

  1. 1Top choices: Add IIT choices (if JEE Advanced qualified) or top NIT choices in Open/category quota where your rank is competitive.
  2. 2Mid-tier NIT J&K quota: Add J&K supernumerary quota choices at NITs like NIT Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal for CSE/ECE — your competition here is only other J&K candidates.
  3. 3Home NIT HS quota: Add NIT Srinagar/Jammu Home State quota choices — HS closing ranks are better than OS for these institutes.
  4. 4Safe fallbacks: Add regular Open/category quota choices at lower-ranked NITs where your rank is comfortably within closing ranks.

Open guide
1
What is the J&K quota in JoSAA and how many seats are available?
Under the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) and the NIT Act provisions, J&K candidates are allocated supernumerary seats at NITs outside J&K. These are seats created over and above the sanctioned intake — they do not displace regular seats. Typically 2–4 supernumerary seats per branch per NIT are allocated for J&K candidates. These seats appear separately in JoSAA's seat matrix as 'J&K quota' (JK) seats.
2
Who is eligible for J&K quota seats at NITs?
To be eligible for J&K quota seats at NITs through JoSAA, you must: (1) Be a domicile of Jammu & Kashmir (UT), (2) Have passed Class 12 from a school in J&K, (3) Have a valid JEE Main rank, (4) Possess a J&K domicile certificate and state subject certificate. After the J&K reorganization in 2019, the domicile criteria were updated — please verify the latest eligibility conditions in the JoSAA 2026 Information Brochure as they may have been further revised.
3
What are the home NITs for J&K candidates?
NIT Srinagar is the home NIT for J&K candidates from the Kashmir division, and NIT Jammu is the home NIT for candidates from the Jammu division. These home NITs have regular HS (Home State) quota seats under JoSAA for J&K candidates. For seats at NITs outside J&K, J&K candidates can use the supernumerary J&K quota. Candidates can also compete for Open/regular seats at any NIT nationwide based on their JEE Main rank.
4
What documents are required for J&K quota in JoSAA?
For J&K quota seats, you need: (1) J&K domicile certificate issued by competent authority, (2) State Subject Certificate (Permanent Resident Certificate or its equivalent post-2019), (3) Class 12 school certificate showing school location in J&K, (4) Standard JoSAA documents (JEE scorecard, Class 12 marksheet, ID proof). Given the reorganization of J&K as a Union Territory in 2019 and subsequent domicile law changes in 2020, ensure your domicile certificate meets the latest updated criteria.
5
How do J&K quota closing ranks compare to regular Open quota?
J&K quota closing ranks are generally higher (worse) than Open/OS quota at most NITs — because the pool of competing J&K candidates with top JEE Main ranks is smaller. For popular branches like CSE at mid-tier NITs, J&K quota may close at ranks 3,000–8,000 where the same Open quota seat closes at 1,500–2,500. However, this varies significantly by institute and branch. Always check the previous year's J&K quota closing ranks specifically (not just Open ranks) when planning your JoSAA choices.

Domicile Certificate Updated

Post-2019 J&K reorganization, domicile rules changed. Ensure your certificate is issued under the new 2020 Domicile Rules, not just the old Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC).
