Why IIITs Are Expanding So Fast

1

Tech-first curriculum

IIITs focus exclusively on IT and CS — exactly the skills in demand. New branches like AI, DS, and Cybersecurity fit naturally.

2

PPP model flexibility

Most IIITs operate under a Public-Private Partnership model, giving them more flexibility to add programs than traditional government institutes.

3

Industry linkages

Several IIITs are industry-partnered (e.g., IIIT Bangalore has strong ties to IT companies), driving demand for their graduates.

4

Government push

National Education Policy and India's digital economy push are driving more seats in tech-focused institutions.

1
How many new seats did IIITs add in JoSAA 2026?
IIITs added 1,578 new seats in JoSAA 2026 — the highest increase among all institute categories. Total IIIT seats grew from 9,940 (2025) to 11,518 (2026), a growth rate of 15.8%.
2
Why did IIITs see the biggest seat increase in 2026?
IIITs specialize in IT and emerging technologies, making them a natural fit for new-age programs in AI, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Blockchain. The government is also expanding IIIT infrastructure to boost tech talent. Several newer IIITs have moved past their initial setup phase and are now adding programs rapidly.
3
How many IIITs participate in JoSAA 2026?
26 IIITs participate in JoSAA 2026. These include the 5 older IIITs (Hyderabad, Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Kancheepuram) and 21 newer PPP-model IIITs across the country.
4
Are IIIT seats filled via JEE Main?
Yes. IIIT seats in JoSAA 2026 are filled using JEE Main ranks. IIITs follow the same reservation policy as NITs — OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, EWS 10%, with home state and other-state quotas for PPP IIITs.
5
Will IIIT cutoffs drop because of 1,578 new seats?
Partially. IIITs that added significant new seats in popular branches (like CSE, AI, ECE) may see some relaxation. However, top IIITs (Hyderabad, Allahabad, Bangalore) will remain very competitive. The new seats are mainly spread across smaller and mid-tier IIITs, where cutoffs may ease.
