1
How many new seats have been added in JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA 2026 has added 4,470 new seats compared to 2025, bringing the total to 67,323 seats. This is the largest year-on-year seat increase in JoSAA's history. IITs added 791 seats, NITs added 637, IIITs added 1,578 (the highest), and GFTIs added 1,464 seats.
2
Which institute type got the most new seats in JoSAA 2026?
IIITs recorded the highest increase — 1,578 new seats (from 9,940 to 11,518). GFTIs came second with 1,464 new seats. IITs added 791 seats (including IISc Bangalore joining for the first time with 125 seats), and NITs added 637 seats.
3
Why were new seats added in JoSAA 2026?
Seats were increased due to: (1) IISc Bangalore joining JoSAA for the first time, (2) 9 new GFTIs being added to the counselling process, (3) Several IITs and NITs expanding capacity in new-age branches like AI, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Semiconductor Technology, and (4) increased enrollment targets set by the government.
4
Will the addition of new seats affect my admission chances?
Yes, positively. More seats generally mean slightly lower closing ranks for some programs. However, the impact is not uniform — top branches like CSE, Mathematics & Computing at premier IITs will remain highly competitive. The biggest relief will be in IIITs and GFTIs where seat increases are the highest.
5
Is IISc Bangalore's inclusion in JoSAA 2026 new?
Yes, IISc Bengaluru is participating in JoSAA counselling for the very first time in 2026. It offers 125 B.Tech seats across 4 programs: Aerospace Engineering (25), Materials Science & Engineering (25), Mathematics & Computing (50), and Mechanics & Computing (25). These require a JEE Advanced rank.
6
How many institutes are participating in JoSAA 2026?
A total of 138 institutes are participating in JoSAA 2026, up from 128 in 2025. The additions include IISc Bangalore and 9 new GFTIs. The full list includes 23 IITs, IISc, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 56 GFTIs.
