Every year, JoSAA's total seat count shifts as participating institutes report their final sanctioned intake ahead of counselling — a routine part of the process that reflects a combination of institute-level capacity decisions, new institutes joining the network, and government policy pushes toward specific technical fields. What sets a year with an unusually large increase apart from a typical incremental year is usually a confluence of multiple growth drivers happening simultaneously rather than any single dominant cause — new institutes onboarding, existing institutes expanding established programs, and multiple institutes launching new-age branches in the same admission cycle all compounding into a larger aggregate number than any one factor alone would produce.

For a candidate, the practical significance of a large seat increase is best understood at the institute-type level rather than as a single aggregate statistic, since the growth is never evenly distributed. As the breakdown below shows, different institute categories can see meaningfully different growth rates in the same year — and within each category, growth is further concentrated at specific institutes and specific branches rather than spread uniformly.
